Crane says not to use guide plates???

Im putting my new 383 engine together as we speak. For valve train I have a CC306, CC beehives, Magnum PR, CC High Energy Hydraulic Roller Lifters and Crane Gold Race Roller Rockers PN#10758. CraneCams claims this. Do not use with pushrod guideplates or with cylinder head castings that guide the pushrods, as severe pushrod wear will occur Thats pretty simple to understand but my CC. PR's say, for use with guideplates!? Am I that stupid that I can't make sense of this. There has to be a simple explaination that im not getting.

If they are self aligning rockers dont use guideplates, if they are non-self aligning rockers use guideplates.

Yeah, sounds like you have the self-aligning (will have what looks like a washer on each side of the roller tip) rockers to me. In which case you do NOT use guide plates.

I've been running the Crane golds SA rockers. No guide plates. With addded spring load, I also used head bolt washers under the rocker studs and lock tite. I had some studs go loose, and, the Rooler rockers will change angle and cause a Hertzian stress failure on the valve tappet(s). The washers (ARP from Summit) have worked for me. I lock-tite everything (red and blue). Also, take note of the head bolt washer chamfer on the top side that mates with the rocker stud chamfer. (383 - D1 - AFR) Hope this helps.

What would happen if you DID run the guideplates also?

Valvetrain bind and severe wear on the guideplates, valves, pushrods (possibly bend them), and studs. It's not something you want to do.
