I dented the crap out of my oil filter trying to get it off my vehicle with one of those chain filter tools, lol (its FULL of dimples). Can I drive it to Auto Zone for a set of filter pliers or should I just stab it and get it off that way? Last time I go to get my oil changed anywhere, hehe , THANKS ---

 

If you still have pressure, it'll probably be OK. However, I'd get someone to take me to get a real oil filter wrench.

 

The screwdriver method usually works for stubborn filters. Personally, I would be nervous to drive a car around with a damaged oil filter.

 

I wouldnt drive it. If you crushed the filter media inside it will be ok, but if the media or glue has broken off you will send it thru the engine. Have someone drive you there.

 

Just use the screwdriver method and stab it all the way through.

 

I WAS going to say to just drive out there, but then I read that comment about the glue and filter stuff being broken loose and I had one of those "ohhhh yeah" moments.

I vote screwdriver now.

A girl came into my shop complaining of an oil leak...

I get underneath it and the filter looked like it had been put into a filter crusher. Literally, it was as flat as a hockey puck.

She had been speeding through a parking lot and had hit one of those concrete parking blocks lengthwise and it had stabbed the top and pushed it up apparently.

SHe had drove on that for 2 weeks, and finally came in when she got tired of that "little red light coming on" and "having to get oil at gas stations"

Use the screwdriver strick and get it out. Change it. I wouldn't take any chances with it.

WHile we're telling off topic oil stories.

I just changed an engine in a 97 Honda. The owner bought the car in May of 05 and since then had put 19k on it without ever changing of even checking the oil.

She saw the oil light come on and asked her boyfriend if it was OK to drive it for a day till she could get an oil change. He checked it and told her it would be OK. The next morning the cam shaft broke in three pieces from lack of oil I guess.

When I drained the oil there was less than a pint of oil in the engine.

 

My FRAM did that to me a while back. Stupid POS. The screwdriver method didn't even work. After I stabbed it, I turned it and the screwdriver started cutting the filter in half. I finally got it off after about 2 hrs of frustration. Longest oil change ever.
