CAM Dyno Tune + Granatelli MAF Info

I just got back home from my dyno tuning appointment with Jeff Creech
of Carolina Auto Masters out here in CA at Tuning Technologies in Colton.
This was the first time back on the dyno with the OBDI PCM, with the
knock sensor. Ended up with 316/334 for and increase of 8/5 since we
first tried the OBDI.

Note: this is with stock exhaust manifolds, catalytics and a full exhaust

Something I have wanted to do for quite a while is test my Granatelli MAF
against my stock descreened MAF. Comparing the best pull with the stock
MAF to the best pull with the Granatelli (A/F ratios were almost exact),
the Granatelli MAF made 1 rwhp and 3 rwtq over the stock. Not much, but
at least it was a gain. I'm happy, and will continue to run the Granatelli MAF
since I know it's at least doing something. I like the resistance to heat soak
aspects of the Granatelli too.

Just think how much RWHP you can get with a Turbonator.

Re: CAM Dyno Tune + Granatelli MAF Info

I think you can have that much variation even without changing the maf sensor, like just making two runs 10mins apart.

Re: CAM Dyno Tune + Granatelli MAF Info

I made five pulls today. Two with the stock and three with the Granatelli.

315/331, 315/331, 316/334, 318/335, 316/334

The 318/335 was a tad lean so he added more fuel. If you look at the A/F
for run two and compare it to run five it's dead on. This may not be the
best comparison, but it's a good one and the price is right because this
info is free. It's also a comparison where the only change is the MAF and
all runs were on the same day, temp, pressure, etc.

Even as a happy user you would say it is not worth the $300 they want for it?

Awesome numbers for such a "small" cam and stock manifolds.

You are definately right, it's not worth the price. Luckily I picked it up for
about half that, which is probably still a bit too much. Thanks for the props.
I'm very pleased with this setup and aside from my past OBDII woes, the
car is right where it should be.

Actually, last time at the dyno tune session a guy had an LT1 that should
have been putting down about 340 and it was only putting down about
290. Jeff tried everything and could not get more out of it. So, we start
taking things apart on the intake tract and low and behold, there is a
turbonator in there. So we take it out, run the car again, and it
pulls about 330. I figure those cost you about 2 HP per dollar. You spend
$20 for the turbonator and it swallows up 40 HP. What a deal!

But they improve your gas mileage.

Remember that larger MAF will help as you add mods because you can feed the motor more and more air with less restriction which is huge.

Re: CAM Dyno Tune + Granatelli MAF Info

This thread is pretty old, but that's good gains.

I'm also running the granatelli maf sensor on my set up and notice a hell of a difference.

The heat soak is also gone as well, compared to the stock maf.

And I got stock manifold. But will be getting headers soon.

My set up -

52mm bbk Throttle body -
K&N Cold air intake -
Granatelli Maf -
CC502 Cam kit -
MagnaFlow Ypipe -
Dynomax billet Resonator
SLP LM exhaust -
Solomon Tune -

Fairly stock, but modified.

I will be receiving my 58mm Holley Throttle body Today, and getting rid of my bbk cause it's just trash for our cars

The holes aren't like stock like the holley is.

Re: CAM Dyno Tune + Granatelli MAF Info

Putting a 58mm throttle body on a basically stock/small cam engine is a huge waste of money. The stock 48mm would have been fine.

That comment is based on engine dyno (not chassis dyno) testing of my 381 cubic inch stroker making 496 HP. The guys on the dyno laughed at my 58mm TB, and showed me on the engine dyno, that measured air flow did not increase past the 78% open position of the 58mm blades. The engine was getting all the air it could consume. Back-calculating, it was evident that a 52mm TB would have provided slightly more open area at 100% open as the 58mm TB at 78% open.

Tuners HATE the Granatelli MAF (and ported, descreened MAF sensors in general), because it screws up the air flow to the extent they have to make revisions to the MAF sensor calibration table (gram/second vs. frequency) in the program. Deleting the "screen" and cutting out the center divider causes more problems that is cures. Did you tell Solomon that you had the Granatelli, so he could attempt to sort out the calibration table? The dyno testing mentioned in posts above indicates a possible 1 to 3 HP gain with the Granatelli. Are you seriously suggesting that you can feel that difference, and it is "a hell of a difference"?

What is your reference to "heat soak" of the stock MAF? This thread is the only place I've ever seen it mentioned, and that involves being here (and on several other LT1 oriented sites) more than 20 years helping people sort out problems with their LT1's. In the hundreds of ECM/PCM data logs I reviewed helping people solve problems, I have never found evidence of a heat soak problem. Please educate me.

I wished holley had a 52mm (Which is discontinued now) bbk is the only 52mm out there, which doesn't flow well.

It's pointless to buy a 52 when down the road you gonna have to upgrade to a 58mm as your build grows.

At the end of it, Lt1 platform doesn't have much options for throttle body's. Only option is 52mm bbk or bore your own.

My question is did they make adjustments to your pcm to compensate with a aftermarket throttle body?

One of Solomon tune options ask do you have a "Aftermarket throttle body?

First time didn't have one, but a week later end up getting one for a good deal from a guy in Vegas.

When I installed that throttle body before actually tuning it in the pcm. If felt off and my tps and iac was everywhere.

But when I got it dialed in the pcm I didn't have to make no adjustments.

I even brought a new bbk throttle (52mm) and didn't have a to make no adjustments

Like the slotted method that ppl do to adjust the right voltage.

.88-.90 was the tps voltage at 0% throttle

That's not such a bad range for a small cam 350

And Yes I felt a difference, not a rocket fast difference but some difference there.

I talk to a old buddy of mines who used to tune lt1s and he even said that the stock maf is good and is able to handle some flow, but heat soak is always gonna be the down fall and cause in coming air to heat up.

Then power would start declining.

Which is understandable. Good friend of mines was doing pulls one day in a dyno in his 2000 camero ls1

On the forth pull he noticed power loss due to the high temp he was having in the intake area.

Almost in high 100s on intake temp due to heat soak.

Have you ever touch that thing after long drive? It be hot.

Since installing the granatelli, my intake temp has dropped a lot.

You can make so much power, but once that heat soak kicks in it doesn't really matter after that cause power will start to decline.

I don’t think you have the slightest idea how any of this works, and are just finding BS on the internet and assuming it’s true.

At this point I think I'm just wasting my time trying to help you, and you don’t want to believe the advice I give you. So I'll just stop.

Good luck.

Wow why so mad man? I'm just validating info that experience guys I know have told me.

BS Off the internet? I get all of my info off these forums. There nowhere else on the internet to get info like this.

And I wasn't even asking for help, you just attack me out of the clear blue buddy.

I don't understand why people on here are such *******s when it comes to stating our own opinions and info.

You guys expect us to listen to everything you say and not have our own opinions. Not saying your wrong on what you know.

But damnit you don't have to be so rude, would you talk to me in person like this?

We all should have some input on here without somebody feeling mad just cause we not going by their word.

It's so so stupid and childish to behave that way when your the most knowledgeable guy on these forums.

People look up to you when it comes to this stuff cause you know it all.

But I am good, I rather get info and help from somebody whos not negative.

You obviously got some demons in your life that you need to deal with so goodluck with that.

Might want to go back and see who helped you with your thermostat problem, where you basically blew off the advice of several highly knowledgeable members who tried to convince you the problem was not caused by your 160° t'stat.

Then there's the electrical problem thread, where I had to ask you to please read what I write and answer the questions we asked. It was like pulling teeth. Then you digresssed to a different topic and I had to ask you to start a new thread (you never did).

Then there's “running rich, fouling plugs.....” thread where you basically blew off my recommendation that you run Scan9495 so I could help look at your data. You just kept asking more questions, offering alternative to my advice.... got so bad I just stopped responding.

In all of those threads I saw NO ONE acting toward you in the manner you describe above. They just stopped helping. I was the only one left.

Now you are endorsing a product that was pretty much written off as useless 15 years ago, and attributing magical powers to something that was documented as adding 1 to 3 HP. Look at the comments above, ridiculing the thread starter by comparing the Granatelli to the scam Turbonator. I really feel a contrarian view to your endorsement was mandatory, to protect future people who find this thread in a “search”.

If you are that unhappy here, feel free to look elsewhere.

Hm that's odd, I could of sworn I updating you guys by telling you it was the radiator that was shot. That was solved already.

And about the electrical tests I was performing (The pointless tests you stated) by checking the voltage.

There was a member who told me to get a dvm to check my voltage and that's exactly what I did.

I'm a noob that what a noob does, what do you expect.

He the one that told me to do everything and your thinking that's me that came up with all that waste of time to check my voltage.

You should have read through the whole thread instead of making assumptions.

I give that guy prop for having the patience to help me out, even tho I was doing things all wrong.

He didn't talk down or say negative comments.
Even the other members they also helped me out a little.

And the running lean thread. Didn't I not tell you that I couldn't find a laptop yet and all I got is a scanner for now.

That's was like a week ago.

So I don't know why you making lies up.

I've seen other threads of you talking down on people just cause what? You have more knowledge then us?

That's not right for you to be acting that way just cause we lack of knowledge on these cars.

Unhappy? I enjoy this forum, I get good information here from some good people. (The info you called BS)

This is where I get my help and guidance at when it comes to my car.

There no other site to go to beside shoebox site.

Like I said you got issues man, you need to fix them cause your negatively is spreading through the forums.

God bless you..
