Re: ebay cold air kits

your probably right. it just seems that a hollow tube with a filter is a hollow tube with a filter.

You said it yourself....there isn't much to CAIs. If you get one of the 2-piece pipes off ebay, they will get the job done. The filter they come with is cheap and you may opt. to purchase a K&N filter - you'll still save money.

Don't do it. You are better off buying a PVC pipe and making on. Those ebay intakes get very hot. After driving my T/A for about 30-45 minutes, I checked my K&N FIPK and it was nowhere near the temperature that the ebay one reached. I could burn a finger touching it... kind of did. I took it off immediately after noticing that and put the factory airbox back on with a K&N filter haha. DON'T BUY IT!

Some good reading;

I'd also bet internal air temperature between the cheap eBay intakes, and a name brand to be minimal.

everything under our hoods gets hot after 30-45 minutes of driving. Those ebay kits wouldnt be any different than a chrome or polished intake elbow.

They are different. The one I had got very hot. My plastic K&N doesn't heat up much at all. Even my metal trick flow intake elbow doesn't heat up much.
