blue silicone on Opti? can I use it?
blue silicone on Opti? can I use it?
just like the title says...I have a blue silicone that I used on my WaterPump Gaskets. I tore apart two Optis (my old one and the current used one that i purchased from here).
-My old one...has a near mint condition outter pieces..but the innards are what went bad (as fas as I know.it was the original 145k mi one)
-My new (used supposedly 3k mi
)..has good innards (looks older than 3k..not sure how honest the seller was)..but the outters were thrashed and cracked way more than he described..infact he didnt at all mention defects..and I spefically asked..(thats another topic..anyways)...
I put the better of the two..my old top (where the plug wires connect to the opti) on the newER bottem/with innars (rotor, etc)..and the only problem is..the gasket that is between the two outter pieces on the newER one is broken up pretty good.My old gasket was very old..so it cracked and was brittle so i threw that away a long time ago.
My question is this..
Can I use this blue silicone gasket stuff on the Opti..just where the two outter 'shells' are. This would basically replace the old gasket..or even add to it maybe just where its broken up...Im only concerned because its possible some may 'squeeze' into the opti when I tighten the bolts..and interfear with the Spark/electrodes..
Any help would be appreciated..as this is an urgent matter..Im selling my truck in TWO days and need my Z running!
Thanks guys!

Hey Man,
I just got done putting a new opti on my lt1 I didn't use alot but I did a small smear job with silicon between my cap and the actual opti. I First put some on the outter edge but made sure none went to the inside of the cap then once I put the cap on wit the small torx screws I just used a little bit to smear around the cap where it seals to the opti just to better ensure myself that no moisture would get in there. I got it all together and running for about 2 weeks now and have had no problems whatsoever. SO if you do just don't go excessive with it, just a light coat.
Good Luck

Good luck man,
IT was only my second time taking mine off, but the first time I only replaced the cap and rotor so I had to go even more internal and replace the opti, But like mentioned before I have had no problems yet (knock on wood) so good luck and have fun. Make sure you get those splined keyed area's in the right way on the opti shaft.
Later Mat
