94/95 Timing sets and welding...

This is somewhat of a crazy/hypothetical question.
Though, I would be surprised if someone hasn't thought of it before.

Here goes:

Us unvented-opti guys cant usually upgrade to an aftermarket timing set because of the splined shaft mounted to the center of the cam gear. Most aftermarket LT1 timing sets, as well as traditional SBC timing sets, do not have this splined shaft. Without the splined shaft, our ignition wont function at all...[edit] (-well, neither would the injectors, but the point being that the car wont run).

So, would it be possible to cut-out the center-section of a 1994 cam gear, and weld it on to the center slot of a traditional SBC timing set (for use with an electric wp)? -Thus retaining the opti-driveshaft?

Aside from getting the alignment of the shaft perfect, I'm not certain if the timing gears are even weldable -- I havent personally tested them with a magnet or file.

This is where you all call me an idiot. I've got a welder, and I might try it if you guys think there is any remote chance of it working...
