Anybody ever hear of them draining off extra coolant when overfilled? A friend and I just finished an engine build a couple days ago and the first time I fired up the motor, it ran perfectly but there was a drip from the weep hole on the water pump. That happened for a little while and the drip got slower and slower. A day later, the drip was gone. Today, I drove the car around a bit and checked for a drip periodically and there was no drip. Should I still be concerned or is this normal when the cooling system is overfilled. We also properly bled the system after filling it. Any suggestions?

 

The only thing I can think of why coolant coming out from the weephole now is the freeze plug isn't seated properly. You still have coolant?

 

Yeah, the coolant level is fine.

 

IMO the weephole wasn't fully blocked off. keep an eye on to make sure it doesnt start leaking again.
it is not normal to lose coolant from that weep hole, if you overfilled the coolant, it would come out of the resevoir.....

The freeze plug won't block the coolant from reaching the weep hole. Maybe you need to look at a mezeire before you give that answer. The ONLY reason that coolant may be leaking from the weephole is if it passes the bearing in the pump. Why the bearing is leaking would be my concern.

 

If that was directed to me, yes I have look at a Meziere and actually installed one one in my T/A. The freeze plug does overlap the entrance to the weephole onn the waterpump housing. That was one of my concerns when I installed the freeze plug, that it blocks the weephole. Maybe somebody else can confirm that or tell me if my memory is bad.

 

i installed a CSI on my car, when i hammered the freeze plug in it did cover up the weep hole......

with an electric water pump, the pump is on the opposite side of the weephole, there is no bearing in front of the freezeplug......

the only thing that stops coolant from leaking out the weep hole and the water pump gear drive hole is the freeze plug.....

There seems to be a bit of confusion here..
There's the water pump[housing] weephole, that the freeze plug covers...
The Mezeire ALSO has it's own weephole, on the motor..
If the Mezeire weep hole is weeping, the seal in the Mezeire is bad.. [that won't fare well for the DC motor in it..]
If the WP housing weep hole is leaking, it isn't sealed off correctly..

 

i thought bad95formula was talking about coolant seeping from the weep hole on the water pump housing.....

The weephole I was talking about was on the electric water pump motor itself. I got it sorted out tho. No biggie. Thanks for the replies.
