Is my rear going south?? i have a weird clunking noise when i make slow left and right turns. when i make tight U-turns that are slow its really loud and bad. i can hear it moer on the drivers side but that doesnt mean its not the same on both sides because i am on the drivers side. i think i read that the differential fluid should be changed, i hope thats it. it probably needs it anyway. what kind of fluid should i use?? synthetic? no additives because lucas oil additives was tested by www.bobistheoilguy.com and they werent too good what should i use. also i think its leaking some oil because i can see it! thanks guys is my rear going bad though? i dont have money to fix that anytiem soon!

 

Yeah your best bet is to change the fluid.I would use mobile syn. with gm limited slip additive.You can get it at your local GM dealer for $6.00

 

i think your spider gears and/or related hardware is headen south....


sounds like its too big of an issue to just be oil related

 

I had the same problem. Changing the fluid and adding GM slip additive helped my situation. What's the worse that could happen, you have fresh fluid in there. As far as what type of oil to put in, do a search. There is a debate as to whether synthetics are too slick or not. Read up and decide what you want to do.

 

Ok man your scaring me about my rear? i hope my spider gears arent going south. i mean its not extremely loud. and when im moving more than 2-3 miles an hour turning you cant hear it. i tonly happens while going slow. i think it is the oil i hope it is at least. my rear holds up extremely well. so i dont think it is giong bad at least i hope not. i am going to change my oil see how that helps

 

rene95z- did changing the fluid fix tha noise like is it still there, nota s loud or what? is it gone. i hope to fix it i dont want it to make the sound no more!!!

 

Mine is doing the same thing, but almost all the time when I am going slow or turning I can hear it. It seems like I can feel the clunking too. Oh well, guess I will have to get 4.10s

 

Well, if the noise is still there, I can't hear it. Used to drive me crazy turning the radio down to see if it still made noise. All I can say is it doesn't rule my world anymore.

 

RENE95Z- that sounds like good news. how hard is it to change the fluid. im just hoping thats what my problem is and its not hurting anything utnil i do cahnge my fluid which will be really soon. to do it is it liike this

loosen the rear end cover
let all old oil drain out
take off the cover
clean up the mess
put some rtv high temp red gasket maker on the cover
line up with rear
bolt back up
fill up from fill plug
check for leaks?
is that it?
also do i have to squeeze the bottle to get it all in there?? thanks!

 

if its the spider gears going, 4'10s won't do crap... those are the main ring gears that determine the ratio...

spider gears are connected to the pinion shaft which lowers and engages when you turn the wheel to allow the inner/outer wheel to spin at different speeds when you turn, or corner...

 

You got it, don't forget the GM slip additive.

 

Ok thanks rene. i hope its not my spider gears that you are talking about. i don think so really becausewhen i corner i dont hear it, it only does it going slow like i said like 2-3 mph slow if im going any faster cant hear it or anything. like taking a turn at 10-15 cant hear it only slow sometimes pulling into parking spots also it does it? sound familiiar anybody? rene did yours do that when pulling into spots?

 

before my spider gears went completely BANG BOOM BANG BANG BANG, HALT

there was a faint sound that showed its face very rarly for 1-2 months before hand...

sounded ALMOST like the parking brake was on... and the power from the car was making the rotors move anyway (very faint, stressed metal bridge sound) and it only happened when i was going 1-3 mph (like backing out of a parking space with the wheel slightly turned...


welp... thats about all i can tell you... hope its not the spider gears...

Well i doub that thyey are my spider gears i dont see how they could go bad it jus makes the noise going slow i guess im still thinking its the fluid and im going to change it so ill find out i guess and most peolple that have had this sound said the fludi helped
