air pump whine

Hi yall. I just bought a 93 Z28 and the electric air pump whines loudly. the seller said it has done that for the whole 5 years he has owned it. do they all whine? I'm tired of explaining to everyone who takes a look at my new ride that "no, that's not a bad pwr steering pump" or alternator or whatever they guess it is. If yall say they don't whine I'm gonna pull it apart and grease it a bit.

I think the air pump should only run in open loop, or is that called closed loop? i forget. Whichever it's called, it runs only while the engine is still warming up. Are you sure it's the air pump?

it's definetly the air pump. If it runs only in open loop then it is working correctly, it runs on startup for a minute or two. It doesn't bother me that much, but it does sound bad.

Ok, i was just double checking. It kinda seemed like you were saying it did it all the time the way you were talking about people hearing it. I'm sure a lot of people have stock 'take offs' available for a fair price if greasing it doesn't help. i'm gonna hang onto mine incase i ever am forced to put it back on. Thats another option for you, just !gank it out.

I take it injected knows something more about the 93's. Maybe they are different and a takeoff wouldn't work, but deleting it still would! haha.

I believe that the Air Pump itself should be fairly quiet. Make sure the noise is not caused by the plumbing being kinked or restricted.

Mine whistles ever since I put in JBA headers. I had it disabled for a while by putting in a resistor across the control pins in place of the air pump relay. This may have contributed to an early demise of my original cat which one of its bricks broke loose and plugged up the exhaust.

I suggest that you try replacing it or just tell people that it's the supercharger.
