search feature sux - remedy?

the Search feature on this site SUCKS! if you put in multiple words it will search for ANY of those and spit back results with no particular relevance. Is there some way to do a boolean expresssion (like "AND") to get better results? thanks

It's your polite way of stating your case that is sure to spark the admins into action.

Well, I linked to a thread I had made in the site help forum about the search, then I reread the OP and realized it was a somewhat different question from mine. So I just linked to the forum instead.

huh?

anyway, yes i have read the FAQ, General Forum FAQ-- no help there on my issue. interestingly, the FAQ has a nice search feature where you can select "Match ALL words". The advanced search doesn't seem to have this feature, nor links to information regarding such. i'm assuming there is a way to match all words if someone can spend 30 seconds to enlighten me that would be great! thx

Here's your answer on the difference between searching the FAQ and searching the entire board.

If I gave you an encyclopedia and I asked you to search for every instance of a very particular word only on page 10, it wouldn't take you long to find them and the effort would be minimal.

However, if I asked you to find every instance of a very particular word in the entire SET of encyclopedias, it would be another story entirely.

That is the difference between searching the board and the FAQ (which has it's own search engine separate from the board.)

VBulletin search is inherently not exactly robust. Try the search box on the main page of this site and see if that helps. The new addition of thread tagging will also help people find what they need. Since it is new it will take some time to build but provided that people actually tag their threads appropriately and and others try searching the tags, it should work nicely.

thanks Jason. i thought there was just something i was missing, some "secret" syntax or boolean expression, etc. ! being a proj mgr of a web dev firm i understand some of the complexities of search engines. it can be particularly problematic modifying such 3rd party software and then have it work right for future upgrades, as well as preserve functionality for past and current versions. no problem, i will make do and try those tags.
