Resizing an Image

I'm trying to resize an image to be used as an Avatar, but to be less than 7k it ends up so tiny as to be worthless.

Making it 100x75 it's STILL too big (something like 13k).

How're you guys making your Avatar's?

Ok, I'm gonna admit that doesn't help. I already knew that part...

Even resizing an image to only 75x56 pixels (in Photoshop) it's 13K. To get it down to 5K it'll be so small as to be useless...

So new suggestions?

Also, even at 47x35 (which Photoshop tells me is 5K) the site tells me it's over 13K. How is that even possible?

EDIT- OK, I think I got it. Took a little experimentation and remembering some Photoshop tricks...

If you weren't trying it already, use the "Save for Web" function, and then select GIF and lower the color count.
