Pros and Cons on a 96 z28 383 stroker?
Hey , i am currently thinking about purchasing a 96 z28 383 stroker from a private seller. I was wondering about the pros and cons about having the car stroked?? ThankS
If it was well built, the only cons I can think of are that it won't rev as fast and will use more gas.
A 383 should have better heads and exhaust than a comparable 350 to run efficiently, IMO. There aren't any particular pitfalls, though.

yea well the only things i know is the tranny is rebuilt which there is papers. the engine has about 16000 miles. it runs 12.9s on slicks. it has lt4 cams, stock heads, moroso intake, upgraded suspension to the max, shift kit. im going to take it to my mechanic to today. also its been dyno tuned.

Well, without documentation, you won't know what has been done to the engine. You don't even know how many miles are on the engine. One thing for sure---it has been raced. It may very well be what the seller says, but if it isn't you will have no recourse.
I'd stay away unless you can get some proof and the car checks out with a knowledgable mechanic. JMHO
Now if the car gets a clean bill of health and everything else is in good condition, and the price is average (not considering the mods) then you get what you pay for. At any rate, I would not pay anymore than what the going rate is for a non-modded engine. Can't blame anyone for trying to recoup some of the money spent on modding an engine, but that's just the way it is.

Depends on what goes wrong. If you have catastrophic failure, you will probably wind up getting a stock short block which can cost acouple of grand. And if you have someone build it, it will cost you labor and materials. So assuming that the labor is $70.00 buck an hour, you may be looking at 3-5 grand.
Add that to the asking price and you have just paid about 12 grand for the car. That's quite a bit for 97 Z28, depending on the overall condition of the car itself.
If you can't live without a Z28, suggest you look for a low-milage, one-owner, (m6 or A4) in excellant condition with papers. You probably can find one for not much more than the one you are contemplating buying. JMHO

12.9? thats slow. i doubt it really has a 383 stroker in it unless he has the receipts. a hotcam is a realllly small cam for a 383. i had a stock lt1 with boltons and lt4 hotcam a few months ago and i hated it. sorry for flaming, but i seriously hate lt4 hotcams. get something unique that puts down good power.
btw I am NOT saying that all hotcam setups are slow, i know theres a few people out there putting down good numbers and track times...but im sorry, im not taking the time to do all that work, and then only put down 330rwhp. :flame off:

You'd have to be crazy to believe it is a 383 w/ no documentation. I mean come on man, don't be a used car sap. Anyone who invests that much money in a car is going to save the reciept for resale value.
