Question Will a Car Cover HELP OR HURT my car if its OUTSIDE!? ---

I just got a run of the mill 3 layer Covercraft cover for my Camaro. My original thoughts were to cover it and protect it from the sun, and lock it on for one more step to keeping it safe. Then I started to realize dust will STILL get under the cover and onto the paint, then when the wind picks up....it will just rock the cover back and forth. Wont that just GRIND the dirt into the paint destroying the clearcoat? What if I put like 3 layers of wax on before I use it, or should that not matter? Thanks for your opinions---

It depends on the quality of the cover, and how clean your car is underneath. I have had nothing but success with my Noah from California Car Cover. It will keep the car dry under very mild weather conditions, and it will not scratch or marr the car if used properly. If you need better water tightness, then you should look into calcarcover's superweave outdoor cover (their top of the line). People that I know that have this cover say that it is almost waterproof in protecting the car against moderate rain.

Buy the best cover that will meet your budget and needs, however. Good luck.

PS: You will need to tie your cover (a tiestring should be provided) for when you may have windy or stormy weather.

I had the low price (quality) wolfe cover on one of my camaros. Just as you asked, dust did penetrate the cover. Plus, during one particular wind storm, the security cable pulled loose from the locking end. The cover would have come entirely off the car except for the antenna keeping it hanging on. The security cable was literally whipping my car in the windstorm.

Because the car is black and I discovered a significant amount of water contoured silt over the top surface of the paint, I decided against using the cover for storage while the car sits outside. I think a cover like mine would be okay for a day or two in good to moderate weather but I wouldn't do what I did with it again. My cars are in a port now; much better option....

I'd never even considered using a car cover outside. I thought they were only for inside use.

I have a wolfe 3 layer (their highest quality and most expensive one) and it works great for storage outside. It is waterproof and it works. I constantly have sprinklers hitting my car in the morning, and by the evening when I take the cover off to go out, there are no water spots, and the car is still clean. I have actually noticed that I have to wash the car a lot less when I use the cover religiously as well.. Just use a california car duster before you put the cover on and when you pull it off and its gorgeous everytime.

If your car is going to be outside, and if you get a lot of ice, I would either buy calcarcover's superweave (their top of the line) because its material is slick to the touch, and ice will not be able to shred its surface. Noah is a good cover, but removing ice off of it could make the surface shred a bit because of sticking. If you have a different or a softer cover, then it will be a great idea to buy a second, breathable, inexpensive cover that has a slick surface, that will shield your good cover from sticking ice, while offering additional water resistance. An example is Silvertech Car Cover from JCWhitley. I used it with Noah (during my outdoor days), and it held off the worst snow storms almost perfectly. It seemed like the car was wearing "sheets of armour".

You can get a Wolf Noah cover from summit for $150, but they usually run between $180-$200 everywhere else. They seem to offer the best protection for the money. I just bought one and I hope it lasts forever.

I tried using one of the cheap $30 target car covers and it just plain sucked. It fit loose, so wind threw it off the car and it didn't let moisture evaporate out, so every morning it was like it rained UNDER the car cover, defeating the purpose of the car cover.

Just remember, you get what you pay for.
