I believe that you can buy an "engine cleaning kit" from auto parts stores, I guess NAPA or PepBoys in the states....Canadian tire here.

What I would use is plain simple green. Just cover up any electrical components (ie. wires, conduits, junctions etc.) with a plastic baggy and an elastic band. Then spray simple green on grimey spots and rinse with a low pressure hose wash.

I would recommend NOT using a pressure washer...my friend did that and his car wouldn't run

It might require multiple cleaning applications if your bay is really dirty. You can finish up by using a "quick wax" or "quick detail" on any shiny parts or underhood to poslih it up a bit.

Question

I have always been told it is bad to use a degreasing agent under the hood, because it strips away grease/lubricants that are needed on moving engine parts, such as where the fan is etc etc...

Is this a myth, or true?

Is there any re-lubricating needed to be done after an engine bay cleaning?

DO NOT get anything wet on or near the opti, as you might ruin it.

I went to a local detail shop and paid 40 bucks. Told them I would break my foot off in his butt if he used and type of powersprayer. He then proceeded to hand wash my entire engine well. Did a faboulous job and I would highly recommend them to anyone in the west michigan area. I figure fo 40 bucks I got a great deal, and now it is just detail work to keep it looking showroom new. Call me lazy, but I wash and wax the damn thing to much to have to crawl under the hood too.

I had an old car once with a very dirty engine. I used a typical engine cleaner & never had any problems. I've also used a power sprayer on specific parts with a lot of greasy dirt built up & had no probs. Nowadays I keep the engine showroom clean with just a mild water spray, wipe dry and put tire dressing on the black plastic parts.
