Touch-up paint tips
Touch-up paint tips
Well the inevitable happend. Someone keyed my left rear quarter panel. And since I have a couple of chips anyway, I decided to get touch-up paint. I got the kit with the fine brush, but when I go and try to repair, it leaves a really noticeable residue. Anyway I was just wondering if there is a website with good touch-up tips. Or if anyone has any knowledge on this, I would appreciate it.
Thanks
Thanks

My dad used this stuff on his vette. Works like a champ. You put the touch up on, let it dry then you apply this langka stuff on it and walla, no more chip and scratch. Pretty impressive.

Thanks for the site KungFu, but I think I will just quit trying to repair my paint with this stuff lol, I am not good at repairing paint at all.
How much do you guys think it will cost to repair around 4-10 different chips in the paint, and a key scratch about 3 inches long, if I were to take it to the dealer body shop or something like that.
Thanks

Actually, a correctly touched up car would require you to look very hard for the touch up spots. It just takes time, some minor wet sanding, and a bit of polishing to make most chips nearly undetectable.
Cost to repair a panel of chips and the keyed area, or multiple panels with chips? I'll assume one panel (consider that might look strange having one "chipless" panel) and suggest two routes:
1. Autobody shop. They will need to sand out the keyed area and the chips to smooth the surface. Primer and primer surfacer may be needed to bring the repar area flush with the surrounding paint. (Look very closely at the keyed area-is the panel creased even slightly? Those rear quarters are soft). They will then paint and blend the color and clear the whole panel. If there are any repairs adjacent to other panels they may choose to blend into the other panel and clear it as well. Figure $400-$800 for paint supplies, labor and a quality job. They should include a buff of the surrounding unpainted panels to help hide the "new" look of the fresh paint.
2. Detail shop. They will either A). Fine brush in layers of matching paint topped with clear to even or slightly higher than the surrounding paint. Or B). Use an airbrush to achieve the same result. Then they will minor wet sand and polish. For chips this method will work very well. With a keyed area it depends on the actual damage, the color (Metallics are HARD to do this way) and other factors. A good shop will suggest the best method for your situation.
Some will even do an airbrush paint blend, but that can have mixed results due to the different types of clear and difficulty of blending them.
Exactly how much a detail shop would charge depends on the shop.

Of course if a paint or body shop does its gonna be good. I had my shop touch up a spot when my car got hit, and you cant find it.
I assumed we were talking about getting some GM touch up paint and trying to touch up a spot in the drive way.
If the shop does it like 97BlackT\A described, there should be no probelm.
