Thumbs up A test to tell if towel is not 100% cotton

I found this on http://www.carcareonline.com/wash_car.html :

"The only way to check is to actually set fire to a rolled up corner of the towel. If you get a clean flame like a candlewick then it is 100% cotton. If you see black smoke and melted fibers, then you got one of the non 100%, anxiously waiting to scratch your paint type of towels. One person checked 130 towels all marked 100% cotton and discovered that 12 actually were."

By the way, as reported in another thread: I called up Viking and they told me that they make two types of white chenille mitts. One has polyester in it. Only the more expensive one that has the "100% Cotton" label has no polyester.

KevinSS, have you still been selling them, I know I bought a couple from you the last time I saw you at the NCM.

Kevin, check Autozone. They have had them in the past.

Larry (moparman), lately I haven't seen any of the 100% cotton Viking mitts around anywhere. I've had people locally ask but nobody can find them anymore. We need to find out where we can definitely get them.

Kevin CMA sells the 100% cotton Viking, not the cotton/poly blend. Here's the link: http://www.properautocare.com/chenwasmit.html

Hmmm, not exactly safe or practical if you're in the store checking out towels. Guess I'll have to carry a lighter with me next time I'm towel shopping. LOL!

His test is true, but it doesn't do you much good until it's too late anyhow.

Why not just check the label for "100% Cotton", that's all I had to do....."well, let me chemically analyze this at my lab, I'll get back to you with the results in 3 business weeks..."

Actually, that is not a good indicator at all to just check the label for 100% cotton. Even though some towels say they're 100% cotton, they are NOT. Look carefully on the tag, it will probably say made in Pakistan or Bangladesh or other foreign country. Do not use these towels. They will cause swirl marks and scratches on the paint surface.

There are very few toweling products that truly are 100% cotton AND "Made in the USA." Next time you're in AutoZone or Wal-Mart or anywhere looking at similar towels, check out the fine print on their towels and see where they come from. In most cases, they say "Made in Pakastan" or something similar. Please don't judge a towel or even a wash mitt based solely on the 100% cotton print. In many cases these will do more harm than good. Just be cautious when towel or mitt shopping...
