Question Swirl Remover: 3M 39009 vs Meguiars #9

I am just wondering if there is much difference between 3M 39009 and Meguiars #9 swirl remover. Is one more effective at removing swirls than the other? Do both of these products repair swirls rather than hide them? I plan to apply the swirl remover by hand with a viking cotton pad and remove it with a 100% cotton towel. I have never used a buffer and don't want to practice on my Camaro.

Thanks for any help.

Both products are very light abrasives for swirl removal with oil fillers and gloss enhancers as well. IMO, the Meguiar's is the easier of the two for use by hand, but 3M works well with a buffer. I've had pretty good luck with Meg's #9 by hand in the past, but it may take several applications depending on your paint's condition...

NO, not without washing away the oils and polishes in the Meguiar's first. Meguiar's polishes generally contain more oil based fillers and gloss enhancers than actual abrasives, so those oils will have to be washed off first before applying Z. It may seem counterproductive to wash away the fillers in the Meguiar's or 3M swirl removers, but the types of fillers they use are VERY short term anyway, so it really makes no difference. You are mainly using abrasives for their "removal" capabilities than their filling. My theory on swirl removal/filling is: use a light abrasive (when needed) like Meguiar's or 3M to physically remove swirls, and then use Z5 for it's long term filling capability.
