Post Stripping clear from Wheels or repaint

I just got a set of the 91/92 RS-Z28 wheels for my 92 RS. They have the factory red paint in the spokes (for lack of a better description) and my car is white. How do I either 1. Strip the paint and clear to polich the wheels or 2. repaint the red so that it will hold up?

The paint can be removed by chemical stripping or plastic media blast (NOT soda blast!!) or shell blast (walnut).

I may not be reading you post right, but clearing them after stripping will not make them appear polished.

The red can be painted by an auto body shop or by yourself using high quality automotive paint. Rattle can won't hold up. Clean and degrease the wheels with an auto paint degreaser/wax remover. Scuff the areas to be painted with green or red scotch brite pads until they are completely dull. Clean again. Mask as needed. Prime with a quality epoxy primer, preferably a primer similar (or matched)in color to the top coat (white for white, red for red, gray for blue or green, etc.)to minimize the contrast of the eventual chips and nicks. Then topcoat with either a single stage or a base coat/clear coat system depending on what you want to spend and durability.

Thanks for the info. When I say strip I mean strip clear coat and all off of the wheels and high speed polish the wheels. I saw a set done like that on EBAY and they were very nice looking.

If you're going to polish them, soda blast is ok to use. Unfortunately, the baking soda is extremely difficult (cost more to clean than blast) to remove from the metal (particularly aluminum) after blasting and causes paint adhesion problems.

The polished wheels look sweet!

Have fun!

I used paint stripper from hardware store for the clear coat but the red took some sanding. I am polishing mine the hard way with 400 grit first followed by 600,then polishing with mag and aluminum polish.Hope this helps.
