question about removing runs and trash in the paint..

ok got the car painted FINALLY.. but beyond that it was suppose to be "wheeled" i guess cut back and buffed? but then it ended up not happening... (a whole other long story) so now im lookin at either doin it myself or getting a shop to do it.. so what i want to know is, how hard is it to do? and how much would one usually charge to do that over the whole car?

Re: question about removing runs and trash in the paint..

I couldn't say how much it would cost but to do it you must watersand with 600 or finer grit paper then buff with a buffing compound followed by a polishing compound. You just want to knock off the texture and not cut into the base or then it needs to be re-cleared. Personally I think its a major PITA to do and it takes a while if you've never done it. I wouldn't do it unless you have a show car or have some trash in the paint you can't live with. I'm sure others here don't mind doing it though.

I'd go with about a 1400-1600 paper. 600 I think is a little rough. It's not really too hard, just a little time consuming.

Re: question about removing runs and trash in the paint..

theres a lot of things i find unacceptable about the paint job i got.. including the attitude i got with it =/ but it has to be done cause theres a lot of runs in the clear and a few bugs... apparently he didnt bother taking it to the paint booth to paint

any suggestions on what kind of buffing and polishing compounds to use or where to get them?

Sounds good if it were mine. I hate to buff so that's why I think it's a PITA. What attitude did you get? Runs and bugs are the obvious stuff that should be fixed before you even see it. All I know is we couldn't get away with that at work.

Re: question about removing runs and trash in the paint..

form the guy who painted it, or who is going to buff it? cause the guy who painted it was my grandfather and he was a complete @$$ about it everytime i went to pick it up, and got into a big fight over it last time, which is why i decided to get it finished myself. from the guy i took it to to do the "color sanding" and buffing.. GREAT attitude.. wanted to do it and was tryin to advise me on some other things to do (wasnt stuff he did so it wasnt just a sell ploy lol) cant wait to see how the finished car is gonna look now and ill finally be able to put my new badges and new overlays/inlays on!
