Hey guys this winter I plan on polishing some parts under my hood. If they goes well I was thinking of stripping the paint off my rims and polishing those? they are factory 5 spokes onmy formula. Is this possible? Is it going to be hard? Will it be hard to keep them looking good? should i clear them when i am done? I was thinking that it wouldn't be too hard of a job because i could use rather large buffing wheels except for the little "corners" of the spokes.

Paint remover will get rid of the clear coat, and then you could use a mild abrasive to polish the wheels. Before doing that, I think I would try a clay bar on the clear coat and see how that works, and then move up to a mild polishing compound if the clay didn't work. Finish off with a good protectant like Zaino. Even if you remove the clear coat, you will still need to use some sort of protectant on the rims. I have seen some chrome wheels that have been done the way you want, and they look very good. Much better than the factory look, but they have to be taken care of much more than the clear coat wheels.

 

I am not talking about just stripping th clear coat off. I am talking about taking all the paint off down to the bare metal. Then i was going to use buffing wheels, sanding and a good metal polish. I want to polish my rims like some people polish stuff under there hoods.

 

Can't help you with that. I don't know anyone who has ever done that. You might go to a salvage yard and see if you can find a rim to experiment on.

 

I used Zip strip when I did mine. Just spray it on, and let the paint crinkle. When it is ready, just take it off with a wire brush.

 

I third gen guys used to polish the rims that came on the 91-92 camaros, but those were not painted just clear coat. I want to try this but don't want to screw up my rims. And the yunkyards around here don't have rims like that laying around that i could buy to try it on. Maybe somone else has tried this.
