Which Porter Cable?
Which Porter Cable?
Which Porter Cable polisher is the one I want to get? Ive seen a few different model numbers thrown around and am confused as to the differences between them. Also, what would be some recomended accesories for it? I know ill need different pads, but which ones? And what kind of glaze or polish do I need? Im a definite noobie when it comes to polishing a car...ive never done it before. BUT ive read on here that the PC is great for beginers and my car needs some help big time, and I REALLY want to whip it into shape by Aug 3rd for a local car show, so im gonna be buying a PC in the near future. Thanks in advance for any help!

The Porter Cable 7424 is essentially the same as the 7336... Arf! The main differences are in the accessories that come with it... Here’s an excuse to visit the local hardware store, or surf the net for comparisons…

The dog says:
Pads; pads come with specific purposes in mind… Cutting, polishing, yadda, yadda, yadda, dealer’s choice, I think they’re pretty much the same… you’ll need a separate one for each compound you use on your car…
Compounds; there are many different brands of buffing compounds out there, most all fall into a never ending argument as to what products are better/best (watch out for hype)… The important consideration is level of abrasion; another is the vehicle (like paints) in which the abrasive is conveyed. Then when you start, always go with the least abrasive and only go more abrasive if that doesn’t ‘cut’ it after a couple of passes with the light stuff. You can kill a pheasant with buckshot, but birdshot leaves more meat… I guess it’s, work up ‘til it’s gone, then work down ‘til it’s done…
Oh yeah, watch the pad for ‘build up’.

The dog says:
If you can brush your teeth without poking your eye you can probably do this with the PC, however, I would also suggest looking at how-to sites, so you get an idea of the basics, and cut down on beginner mistakes… Practice on the spouse’s car or buddies beater…
“Thanks in advance for any help!”
You’re welcome… Arf!
I'm sorry for the long post, but there's no short answer...
