i just got my side mirror housings and b-pillar (sail panel, whatever) painted body color on my z28, and the guy said never to use wax, even on the stuff he didn't paint
he said that the paint was polyurethane like or something or other and should always be exposed
he said a good polish would shine it up nice and would be better than ever putting a wax on
anybody have any thoughts on this?
i've used wax before and i've never had a problem
i think i'm going to wax anyways (wait on the fresh painted stuff for a month or so though) because i think it will just help protect
just wondering what you guys thought of this radical (to me) idea

 

All I have to say to that is

 

If you listen to what that tool told ya, He'll be painting your car again... and making money off ya .. Which is what it sounds like he intended to do....

There are even products on the market that are polishes and waxes combined although they do not work that well. The term wax is way, way over used, it should really only apply to carnauba waxes but in todays world you have synthetic waxes now which really are polymers...

 

well, this guy was 60years old or something, and he didnt seem like a money-grubbing type guy so i was more willing to consider his opinion than somebody of different character

guess it doesn't matter anyways, i finally ordered some zaino
i'm not sure if it's worth the price yet or not, but i finally decided to bite the bullet and try it

 

I would advise you not to use that person again (just my opinion). Wax or synthetic finish polish is absolutely necessary for the longevity of your paint surface. Period. There is absolutely no substitue for applying wax or polish.

You will find in time that without properly caring for your car's paint by not waxing or applying a finish coat of synthetic polish, that your paint's finish will be full of dirt, chips, and have endless signs of abuse. Prolonged neglect will render your paint quite dry and near colorless, which will require it to be repainted.

I have had cars up to 11 years and not had to have any wetsanding or repainting done. My previous car that I owned for 8 years (the car is 11 now), still has its original showroom shine, thanks to nothing but dilligent coatings of carnauba wax.

Waxing is just something that you can't skip if you are concerned with maintaining your paint's finish.

 

I never, ever, ever wax my truck...

Wax is like coke.. Coke can mean pepsi.. Soda can mean pepsi ect... Wax can mean sealants like Wolf Gang Or Klasse SG...


I would use a high quality pre cleaner then seal the paint every month or two for a nice shine.. Do not forget to use clay and some swirl remover so you get a real nice shine.

 

First of all, did the guy paint your car with urethane, and is it a base coat/clear coat or a Maaco (mix the clear & base together) single stage. Even though urethane is very durable, it like anything else exposed to the elements is subject to wear and tear. A good quality wax will protect the finish as long as you are willing to maintain it.

It is unwise to wax your paint for 60-90 days depending on the paint manufacturer even though (I hope) it was done a spray booth as there is still solvents that could be trapped underneath the wax.

Is the guy giving you a written warranty backed by the paint supplier-most good shops will and a godd paint company will stand behind their product.

Polish=brighten paint
Wax=protect paint
Not waxing=neglecting paint=repaint

 

my boss had his cobra kit car (427 insane will get pics) painted by some nationally known painter... will get name later... anyway this guy did and incredible job-

basically he said dont wax car for year and half - and keep out of sun as much as possible... after year and half everything works out of the paint and it fully sets up - then my boss has to bring the car back and he re-wet sands everything and polishes it...

he then told him to use zaino car polish but only once a year and to just use detailer spray to shine it up...

 

But that isnt an everyday driver, exposed to the elements ...

sounds about right to me, with these fiberglass bodies and paints for them you shouldnt have to wax that often or really have to worry that much about it, best thing to do in my opinion for nice easy low maintence shine is get it clear coated for a couple c notes (hundred dollar bills ) on the side or something, or get the wazoo job...
