paint bubbling

This is a strange problem i'm having. Iv'e been painting cars for about 7 yrs and have never seen this happen. I got a cowl hood for my camaro and painted and cleared it with no problems. After it dried and i was looking at it, i noticed i did not completley get it covered (the red paint was darker in some places). To most people this wouldn't have been noticeable but i am a perfectionest and have to have everything perfect. So i wet sanded it with some 600 grit and painted it again. There were two little places that started to bubble. It looked like there was paint remover put on it. I thought it was pretty strange but didn't think much of it (thinking it could've just been not cleaned good enough. So I sanded it down and sprayed more paint on it. The area that was bubbling got worse and it only seemed to happen on the edges of where i sanded. So I did the same thing again but sanded out a little further. Now the spot that is bubbling is bigger. It don't happen in the middle of what is sanded, it happens on the edge. So once again, I sanded the area bigger and decided to reprime the area with 2k primer. Then i wet sanded again with 600 grit and cleaned and painted. Now the bubbling is back but only where the primer is fading into the red paint. I cannot figure this out. The only thing i can think of is sand the whole hood, reprime it and repaint it. Any other suggestions?

Re: paint bubbling

Could it be possible there is a contaminant of some kind in the paint, or your dryer not working right?

nope....only does it at the edge. If there was a contaminant in the paint it would do that all over. Don't make any sense to me. Like i said, i have some pics that could help out if somebody will host them.

Thumbs up Re: paint bubbling

what kind of hood is it????

my first hood was fiberglass and had no problem with it.
my second hood was fiberglass also but bubbled on me.

later I found out that when you recieve a hood from the FB (fiberglass) company it is freshly made. when you install a fiberlass hood and after driving your car you get a funny smell. If you have ever owned a FB hood youll know what Im talking about, but anyways that smell is b/c the engine is cooking your hood since it is fresh.

Later I found out that the guy that painted my first hood had installed the hood on my car and left it sitting out in the sun for about three to four days that included opening it and letting it cook through the inside too (with the sun)
then finally one day before he laid down the paint he turned on the car with the hood down and left it sitting there for about 15-20 min to really cook the hood with the engine heat.
Then everything made perfect sense the engine heat would try and cook the hood but would also heat up the paint and cause it to bubble.

man I hope that information helps in any way possible
you may not thing it will make a difference but it will

Re: paint bubbling

I got the hood from year one over a year ago. Before I had a chance to paint it I spun a rod bearing so a motor rebuild was a must. The paint has been on the back burner since because it has been in a garage. In the past couple of weeks I have been taking everything apart and repaint it. Just to give an update, I finally got the hood done yesterday. I still have no idea why it did that but it is fixed now. I layed out the racing stripes and got it cleared. Looks good. After I get everything wet sanded and buffed out, I will post some pics. Thanks for all the help guys
