my damn z28 wheels always get all black
is there ANY way to stop this black buildup? I think it's brake dust but I'm no expert....Cleaning the 10 spoke rims is a pain in the ***

Normal with metallic factory brake pads, on my next change I am installing the new GM ceramic brake pads for less dust.

Clean them, clay them, and then use Zaino polish on them. It makes cleaning them MUCH easier.

You can clay your wheels just like you do the surface of the car to try and get them as clean as possible.

I have a similar question. I've got a 30th anniversary Z28 with white painted wheels. I bought it used, and am the third owner. It looks to me that someone in the past scrubbed the wheels with either course scotch bright, or maybe even sandpaper. Needless to say, the rough finish that was created by this mistreatment grabs and holds onto the brake dust. After a wash, the body shines like hell, but the wheels seem to look dull.
I'm thinking about having them powder coated. Is this an option? cost? Anyone ever do this?
Thanx in advance.

likkitysplit...
I too own a 97 30th car with white rims and am the 2nd owner. My wheels are EXACTLY as you describe yours. NOTHING I do seems to bring back a richness like the body has so I've been pondering the idea of powdercoating the rims. If you do this, I believe also getting a two coat clear coat on top of the powdercoating would give you what you're looking for...a deep shine to a nice clean white wheel
If you do do that, let me know, I'd be curious as to the outcome. GOOD LUCK!

Yeah, I spent about two hours today trying to get the front ones looking nice and shiney, to no avail. I've gotta do something different, but I don't know what. I don't want to use aftermarket wheels, because I want to keep the car in it's bone stock condition. Help!!!

But make sure you also wash them at least once a week, or you'll be claying the next time again. Otherwise, normal car wash + water will take off the fine layer within about a week's time.

You should both get your wheels powdercoated.. It shouldn't cost more than about $40 per wheel, and will make a huuuuge difference!
Good luck!
