Red face JUST MADE AN A$$ OUT OF MYSELF

Okay, delete, delete, delete my other posting. As I indicated, I seem to have just made an a$$ out of myself. I just went out, all huffy and puffy, and the Z1 and Z5 combo wiped off like a dream, just as usual. For some reason it took about 3 more hours than usual to dry??? The sun hit it and literally blinded me. Now my question is: everything looks fantastic except on the hood where I previously tried to remove it too soon. I'm having trouble getting the "smeariness" out, what should I do?

Also, I now want to switch to Z2 with ZFX added to it, do I have to wait the recommended 6 hours it says on the Z1 bottle? Should I just put it to bed and start again in the morning? Darn, I wanted to cruise tonight and show it off!! I should have just used the ZFX but I had so much Z1 left that I hated to let it all go to waste, oh well, learned my lesson well. Once again, Zaino has shown me its superior shine and ease of removal (if I hadn't been a dummy and tried to remove it too soon). I can't wait to get that Z2 on it.

Yeah, the smears were most likely caused by premature removal and/or a heavy coat of either or both products being applied. Keep in mind that two products are on the surface when using Z1, which usually takes a bit longer to fully cure and dry. Do a Z7 wash on the smeared panel and it should go away, leaving a beautiful shine.

Yes, since you used regular Z polish, you need to wait at least 6 hours before another regular coat, or coats using ZFX. After that, you can start doing the ZFX up to 3 coats per day. I'd recommend the max of 3 coats with ZFX, because after the third coat my finish seems to just pop with gloss, depth, and brightness. One or two coats is great, but the third coat is like kicking it up a notch, BAM! Don't forget to Z6 in between and before and after each coat!

Mike

Oh, and always wear these after the Z polishes, to prevent eye blinding!

I took a damp towel to the hood as it says in the Zaino instruction sheet and most of it came off, shines great except the parts that I now see got scratched last fall in the great dealership debacle. Which still makes me !!! It got dark on me last night, anyway. Did I ever mention I HATE WINTER!?!!!!! So I am going to finish today when I get home from an appt.

I may as well ask, would they (professionals) have to repaint the entire hood to get rid of those deep scratches? I suppose so?? They really are annoying but I don't want to start any major paint work yet. And believe me, 3M would not do it for these. . . they are located on the rear of the hood, right on top of the air scoop or whatever, couldn't be in a worse place to show off. But they are right where the jerks had to work on it so there's no question in my mind that they did it. They were not there last summer, for sure. Geez, after this tirade I think I could cut my own hair now rather than go pay to have it done! All I have to do is think about the damage those guys caused and my blood pressure goes up about a hundred points, I'm sure. . .

Angry

BTW, did I ever mention that after the abuse my car took last fall, now when I wash it the water comes right in the driver window? And alot of it, too. I have to wipe out even the rear seat when I'm done. It seems to me that the window should be able to be adjusted to stop that or am I wrong? Man, fast rewind to a year ago, I'm pissed all over again.........

Water comes in when you gently rinse, or are you using pressure? T-Tops?

It's not uncommon for some water to get past the seals if pressure is used, but from how it sounds you must have water leakage when driving in the rain as well. I'd verify the seals are in correctly and check the driver window for looseness (some of which can be corrected) and , if you have T-Tops, verify the seals are mated correctly and the top is evenly in place.

How deep? Through the clear into the base coat? "Deep" is so subjective. If I had 10 people tell me they needed a re-paint for "deep" scratches, probably 7 of them just needed a little wet sanding and buff/polish. Since I can't see it myself, I hesitate to come out and say "yes".

If the clear is compromised (that would be pretty deep, GM puts on a fair amount of clear) then you would need to sand them smooth, color touch up/blend, and completely clear the hood.

Alternatively, you could purchase some factory touch up color and clear from the dealer, and using a very fine brush (not the one that comes with the paint!) lay in enough color to hide, then layer clear until it is just a bit higher than the surrounding paint. Wet sand with 2000 and a firm block, and buff/ploish out. This process will at best make the scratches disappear, or at least make them hard to find. Make sure the color matches well first. (NOTE: scratched clear looks white, and people often mistake that for "going through to color" or "primer". If the scratch is harder to see when wet, try using only clear at first.)

[edit] Clean the scratches well with a Q-Tip and rubbing alcohol...

Jeff
