Angry Factory Paint is cracking on me.

I have been having this problem for the last 6 to 9 months. The factory paint just plain sucks on these cars. First the black t-bar on my car got these little bubbles in the paint. Now the driver's door has 5 1"-2" cracks in the paint, up near the window. The left front fender has a crack about 4" to 5" The rear spoiler has a 3 cracks ranging in size from 1" to 3" The area under the spoiler, up near the window has a couple of 4" cracks in it. Also the hood has a spot on the edge where it meets the right front fender where the clear coat is coming off.

My question is do I have any sort of recourse with GM on this issue? My car is of course a 1999 with 65,000 miles on it. It is waxed once a month, washed once a week, and always garage kept. Did GM issue any recalls regarding paint defects? My car is a 1999, Navy Blue Metallic with black mirrors and t-top hoop. I'm not sure of the trim codes, but if somebody would tell me how to read my door sticker, I'll give them to you.

Re: Factory Paint is cracking on me.

I too have a '99 SS, black, and the paint on the "bar" over the roof began bubbling under sunlight/heat.

I called GM directly and attempted to speak to a factory rep., but I was assigned a case worker instead who I was to deal with. I was assigned a case number, and I was told the rep. would be in touch. As I waited I also contacted the person in charge of running the bodyshop at my dealer.

Long story short, GM contacted my dealer, and they agreed to pay 1/2 the cost to install a completely new roof bar, along with prep., and paint.

I haven't had any other paint issues.

My car had lots of cracks in the paint after a nasty hail storm. LOL Insurance settlement tried to take me, but fortunately my buds in the body shop took a 2nd look and estimated an extra $1700 that the insurance company didn't catch.

Never, Ever trust an insurance company's estimate. When your car is damaged, take the estimate and have your body shop make another one.
It's easier for the shop to get more time (money) for work than it would be for a regular person.
Insurance companies don't care about you, your car or the shop doing the work. They want your car fixed as cheap and quick as possible. And 9 times out of 10, a good shop will fight those battles with the insurance company so you don't have to.
Usually, the estimator at the shop has dealt with the adjustor for your insurance company before, and will probably know how to work that person as well.

Insurance will always cover any excess over their estimates. If they didn't they wouldn't be in business long. I just like to know ahead of time and get it out of the way to avoid future aggravation.

Sure they'll cover damages beyond the estimate. When the repair shop calls them. But you try and call them yourself, without going to a shop for an estimate, after finding the extra damage on your car and try to get more money from them.
You'll have a better chance taking them to court.
I see this every day.
They don't even like paying us for work that has to be done for a quality job.

Totally agree. Used to be in the body business myself for a time until my uncle retired.
