Engine compartment...

when i worked at a car dealer detailing cars we cleaned engine compartments with degreaser mixed w/ water and then pressure washed it and then squirted some white milky-like stuff on it to finish it off. i was wonder if this is a safe method to clean our engines? if not how did you guys do it?

thanks!

Re: Engine compartment...

That will work as long as you don't get the ole opti spark very wet. Everything else will be fine to spray.

I dont see why you would leave the car running....I dont suppose it would hurt anything unless you managed to suck up all kinds of water in the intake but then again I dont see any advantage to leaving it on so the best advice I believe would be to shut it off.

thats what we do, we never have had a problem with opti's or anything else. Sometimes you can use a little rim acid on metal parts to clean them with some steel wool or a wire brush. That white milky stuff is also probably dull away which we use. Gives the engine a nice shine after its clean.

Re: Engine compartment...

I always leave mine running for one reason....i have caused it to start bogging down and running like crap while spraying it.I just grab the throttle linkage and start revving it to get it to run good. I figure that if is not running while i spray it i might not get it to start back up. This may just be all in my head but i have never had a problem doing this so it works for me.

Re: Engine compartment...

I have used Rust Eater that you can buy from AutoZone. It works well, it is an oil based spray that turns everything back to the original color and it takes all the grime off of the hoses and turns them black. Just spray it on and let it dry and it leaves a nice shine and color.
