correct procedures for restoring paint
i have a few swirl marks and scratches that i would like to take care of as much as possible. i have been told to first use a rubbing compound, then a polishing compound, then a hand glaze. i don't know if this is right or not. where does the clay bar come in at? where does the wax come in at? i don't have zaino products and i need to get this done before i can get those products in. the only waxes i have are cleaner waxes. any suggestions?
Try the Z5 and ZFX to hide the swirls & scratches, or 3M Swirl Mark Remover.
Zaino actually does a great job of hiding the swirl marks. I have a project car I'm working on that has VERY bad swirls (and it's black...). I'll let you know. It covered up 100% of the swirls on my truck though. Made a huge difference.

I would not use rubbing compound on a car with just swirls, you will have a major dulled paint if you use rubbing compound. I would clay first and then use 3M Swirl Mark Remover part number 39009 which is a mild product with the orbital and foam pad, you need to remove the 3M before it drys, at that point you can use a glaze like 3M Imperial Hand Glaze and then use your cleaner wax.
the only reason why i was going to use the rubbing compound is because on the front of my car, there are marks from bugs being left on the car too long and they are etched into the clearcoat. i can't believe the kid i bought the car from would treat a z28 like that.
i have already clayed the car and that did shine the paint up a lot, but did nothing for these marks. i guess i can try the smr first and see how it turns out??
