Clear Coat.
Clear Coat.
Today I removed the side mouldings from my car.Did the passenger side first, everything went to plan, cleaned all the gunk off with some polish and it looked sweet. Then for the driver's side, after removing the moulding from the driver's door I noticed that it looks like someone had clear-coated the door with the moulding in place,at some point in the past.So where the bottom edge of the moulding met the door there was a hard, discoloured edge of clear coat along the whole length of the door
.At this point I wished I hadn't started the job,but it was already too late
.
I tried to blend it in with some cutting paste, but the paintwork that had been under the moulding was a different colour to the rest of the bottom of the door.
So I wet sanded the entire bottom half of the door to remove the clear coat.
Now the bottom half of my door is all the same colour, but obviously a little flat due to the lack of clear coat.
Would it be possible to have just the bottom half of the door clear coated, and if so,how much do you think it would cost?
Somebody tell me it can be done,I'm having a bad day
.
All the best,Mark.

Also the door is plastic,do I just use acrylic clear-coat or is there some special stuff for plastic surfaces?Since wet sanding the door I applied polish to it to see if I could get it to shine, what should I use to remove the polish before applying the clear-coat?
Thanks,Mark.

Just to update you,I've booked the car in at my local bodyshop, they're going to clear-coat the bottom of the door tomorrow.£60 +VAT.
I figured I may as well let the professionals do it,the rest of the car is pretty much immaculate and I'm sure they'll do a much better job of it than me

Just got the car back from the bodyshop, all is well, they did a good job of it,the bottom half of my driver's door is now shiny again
If the car had been an old beater I would have attempted this job myself, but it's my pride and joy so I thought I'd better leave it to the pros
.
Respect to anyone who does their own bodywork,it's not as easy as it looks.
