Cleaning inside exhaust tips
Cleaning inside exhaust tips
Whats a good way to clean the carbon out of the inside of exhaust tips, I'v tryed brake cleaner, wd-40, scrubing a toothbrush with mothers polish, nothing getting it off, just lightening it up.
I don't think you're ever going to get all of it off. The best I can think of to get it out is paint thinner and a wire brush, followed by a brillo pad.
The best route is to just buy new tips if you want them really clean... It isn't worth the time it would take to get all of that carbon out.

i use a mothers powerball to clean the inside om my tips (2.5") with the metal polish. works pretty well.
its sort of like getting heavy brake dust off rims. after all the crud thats caked on there is off, if you keep up with it, it shouldnt be too much of a problem. just the initial effort is the most taxing.
what i also use for my rims is a rag soaked in water with a little gas. works pretty well for getting the heavy stuff off, but ive never tried it on exhaust tips (and probably never will).

if you take a look at the ingredients of metal polishers, pretty much all of them contain petroleum distillates.
i highly doubt that a solution of 20 parts water to one part gasoline would cause as much harm to chromed metal as the standard chrome polish, the exhaust gas and condensation would probably break chrome down quicker .
