Cleaning engine bay without killing anything

Well, how can you do it!
Mine looks like crap and it needs to become nice again, it's really starting to iritate me, but I don't have money to replace my opti quite yet, so I can't just go in and power wash it....any suggestions.

I'm wondering the same...even if I knew, I still have heard so many opti stories I'd probably still be afraid...

A lot of people use Simple Green. Spray on and hand wipe it off. Even using a spray bottle, keep it away from the opti.

Im in the same boat, but I dont have the time or the patience right now to do the whole engine bay by hand. The bay has never been cleaned really, so there is bunches of baked on grime all over that thing. Ive heard the opti stories myself, but dont necessarily believe that it happens to everyone. Ive tried washing it before, with a hose, and nothing bad happened, but nothing good happened either Still looked the same. ive heard that washing the engine while its running is better that when its off, cuz if you have a vented opti, then it actually pulls out moisture when its running. However, couldnt I just make sure that the opti is covered, then water down the whole thing, spay on cleaner, then power wash it off?

I detail mine 1-2 times a year i use purple power degreeser spray it down lightly use a small soft brush on bad spots and rince with a presure washer. the opti is under the water pump just avoid that area with the wand and you shuld be fine good luck.

I just use some of that orange oil based degreaser and a toothbrush/rag.

I usually just use a wet rag.
Then I break out the metal polish.
The fuel rails and ac lines look great with a little polishing, and really make things look better under the hood. There's plenty of metal under the hood to make look nicer. What also helps is routing all the wires, perhaps putting new sheathing on them, so they're not allover the place.
