I live in CT so its cold here right now but I still want to clean my engine. I don't like the idea of spraying my engine with water since I don't really know what I'm doing when I do that and i'm sure that i'll screw something up. Also the water would freeze after I soaked the engine and since my car is off insurance for the winter I can't drive it around to dry it. Is there a way to clean the engine bay by hand with a cleaner? Would a product like simple green work? I don't mind using water, I just don't want to spray the engine with a hose.

I just use a wet rag... then I go back over it with a dry one.

automotive glass cleaner works well. Go over it first with simple green then with the spray glass cleaner, it'll shine.
