3M ? to detailers for a 1968 classic original paint
Want to do a number on new acquisition. 1968 in sig below. Color code D for Blue Mist Poly.
Taking the 3M route.
Picked up
39002 Perfect It Rubbing Compound - Fine Cut
39007 Imperial Hand Glaze
39026 Perfect It Show Car Wax
used a Porter Cable 7336SP orbital and wool bonnet for 39002 using gentle to medium pressure. Pad is blue and four white towels are blackened.
paint feels smooth; but still looks like it did when I started.
should I repeat with
39004 Super Duty Rubbing Compound
and proceed with 39007 and 39026
OR
leave be
skip the 39007 and get
39109 Glaze Swirlmark Remover and apply with orbital using foam pad
then use 39026.
Any ideas.
Previous owner was a lil ole lady who probably ran it through a car wash once a year - 35 year old car with 76,000 original miles on clock ( last oil change sticker from Buick was at 73,XXX)
I'm using Turtle Wax bonnets for now. Just ordered the velcro piece for orbital and sets of Meguiar velcro backed pads in wool, terry and foam.
TIA
If you think my approach or product selection is nuts, it's OK to say so. I'm not thin skinned!

Maybe the 3M products Iselected are for the newer base coat clear coat systems and not a 35 year old factory paint job.
Maybe an orbital is for waxing and glazing and doesn't move fast enough for compound to work.
Maybe a high speed buffer @ 2400 rpms with a mix of compound and swirl remover will work using the right speed movement and pressure; or maybe it will burn the paint. (would be an improvement)
Just talking to myself.
