Rear axle
Rear axle
I messed up my pinion bearing and decided it was a sign to swap out the rear end. The local junkyard turned out to be a bust, so is there anyone out there, preferably in the North Florida/South Georgia area, that has a Z28 rear end they don't need?
Re: Rear axle
Watch out for what gear ratio you get. The stock Z28 axle was a fuel-saving 2.73 gear- my car came with that- I can't believe GM would build a sporty car with prairie gears like that, but it helped to boost GM's CAFE average. The optional "performance" axle for automatics was a 3.23, and the standards came with a 3.42- which is what I am running now.
Re: Rear axle
I'll check tomorrow, but I think I have 3.23 gears back there. I'd prefer to keep it that way just so I don't have to put up with the speedo being off, but I could swing a 3.42. I do a little too much highway driving to consider a 3.73, maybe when I get the time/funds to turn this car into a project vehicle...
Re: Rear axle
Well, this hasn't turned out quite as well I had hoped. I think I'll have to pick up a diff kit next week and fix mine for now. I guess I check back every so often to see if my luck might improve. But, as a last shot, does anyone have a Z28 rear end with the 3.23 gears, preferably a 3 channel? I'm reminded of a saying about beggars not being choosers, but I haven't much to lose at this point. Thanks guys.
