MAC Aluminum rearend girdle/cover. (10-bolt)
1" thick aluminum girdle cover made by MAC. Has been used on my stock 10-bolt for approximately 3 years (~60,000 miles) with no problems. Works great.
Benefits:
1) 1" thick cast aluminum.
Adds torsional strength to rearend 3rd member (pumpkin).
2) Two large preload-studs.
Assists in pre-loading the center of axle bearing caps using the strength of the cover to help seat axle caps under heavy loads.
3) Drain plug.
Allows you to drain the rear with 1 bolt instead of removing the 10-bolts that hold on the cover, the gasket/RTV and the need for cleaning. Never used it myself, but I suppose you could if you were doing gear breakin yourself.
4) Fill plug.
Allows you to fill the rear from behind the rear instead of from the stock fill hole on the passenger side. While the GM hole requires that you fill "until oil comes out of the hole"... the higher rear plug allows you to just pour 3 quarts and posi additive in without the spill/mess involved of "fill to the hole" directions.
That's about all I can think of... it's been cleaned up and looks good. About $140 new... I'll take $70 OBO.
