Everything you ever wanted to know about radar detector functionality:

www.radartest.com

Bottom line: They all "work" but some perform better than others. When shopping for a detector, you want to make sure the unit maximizes sensitivity but reduced false alarms. Its a good idea to find out what the local law enforcement radar/lidar frequencies are, and buy a detector that best defends against the threat. For example, police are now using laser technology...which means they just point and shoor their guns in short bursts. By the time you hear your detector beep, the officer already has your speed documented.

Most people swear by their Passport/Escort and V1 detectors.

bs!! I have the bell 985 and it works killer , never falses like my old units used too . I have it pare ed up with the bel lazer jammer setup and they work well together to fight the new " instant on " the police will be using . Im still waiting for a good test of the jammers , I went through a lazer trap on the mary hill bypass and it was going off , I was flying and didny get a ticket buy I want better proof its working as it should .
The V1 is a killer detector but its not worth the extra $ anymore imo . The bel 985 is flashable so u can have it upgraded too . My 985 has already paid for itself !

This is just a vent but , alot of people think a radar detector is a cop car detector . The cruiser has to be trolling for it to work well , or there has to be someone getting shot infront of you with lazer etc for the unit to pick it up . If theres nothing there, theres nothing for it to pick up . Ive had sooooo many people in my car where we go by a cruiser and there like " dude it doesnt work " Its always funny when later it pics a car up from 5 blocks away and the signal goes from 2 - 9 progressivly and then back down as you pass it and there like

Radar detectors are only good on the highway, in the city you better keep your eyes open and always on the look out for the fuzz.

The human eye can see a maximum of 2 km so it's all about bein alert and spotting the cop from far away. How far do there radar systems work from anyway?

I pick em up in town no problem , always less warning though for sure . Ive seen em from about 6 blocks in town but I really start paying attention around level 5 - 6 on the unit cause sometimes there on side roads that parellel etc and u pick it up . If theres hills and buildings its going to really reduce its sight . On the highway and its radar its FAR but if its lazer you better have someone ahead of you .

Another thing is to keep your unit current , 3 years old or more Id think about an upgrade .Ive seen tests were the older model V1's couldnt even keep up to the cheap *** fuzzbusters in testing so If you have a V1 get it sent in regularly for upgrades

I get about 3km of warning in the city, loooooots of warning on the highways. Usually by the time I go by the cop I'm laughing hysterically. They don't stand a chance.

Valentine 1 is worth the money.

P.S. For a little extra sensitivity, run yours with the "A" logic and your X band turned off. "A" gives you better Ka performance and you get rid of the annoying X band beeps.

I have had great luck with Bel in the past. Been using for over 15 years now.

Right now I am using a killer Passport 8500. tracks and reports up to 8 seperate signals at one time. Has been killer to use.

As noted a box is not a cop finder for stupid people

Once you learn to use a good detector you will ALWAYS want one in the car you are driving if for any thing protection.

It is SOOOO easy to tell bad signals from a cop with a good detector

well i got a cheapo one (lol 45 bucks for a used) it seems to have helped a bit, its got me noticing a lot more cops at least, a few false alarms every now and then, but they are always in the same places... im assuming its due to some alarms/airport/boats...

btw where have u guys installed urs?? im loving my install above the mirror (i tapped into the power from the rear view mirror)
