Questions for BC car guys...

Hey, my dad just moved to BC and was telling me how cheap the insurance there is. What are you guys paying exactly? Also, a question about air-care... what do they test for? Is it just emissions or do they test other things like air-bags, and safety the car?
I'm asking because I plan on living with him through the summer months, and might just switch my insurance over to BC insurance when I do (if it's actually that much of a difference). Thing is my Cavy doesn't have air bags, and my Firebird would never pass emissions
I have one accident and one ticket on my record.. not perfect, but not too bad, how much do you think I'd be paying?

Having two plates is going to suck, but if I'm going to save some money I'd do it.

Thanks for the help.

Re: Questions for BC car guys...

hmmmm, the general trend is that BC insurance is more expensive, as there's no comptetition here...

i pay $2200 a year (with full coverage) on a 97 v6, with 40% off, which i think is a rip off personally (i'm 22 fyi)

as for aircare, i dunno what to say about ur 76, dunno what the rule is for older cars... all i know is that aircare is a crock, and is possibly going to be abolished in a couple of years.... i dunno, i'd say keeping alberta plates would prolly be a lot cheaper overall...

edit: aircare is only for certain areas of BC in the vancouver and closely surrounding areas....(maybe others, i dunno)

Ive heard the opposite. Compared to private insurance in AB if your under 25 they bend you over. My buddie was paying 4500 a year in AB , double what it was in bc.

In BC the system starts young drivers at 0% surcharge but private insurance will rule that you are young and most likley to cause huge accidents so you face a high premium.

Re: Questions for BC car guys...

the reason it may have been so cheap for your dad, is because icbc gives out more discounts if you havent had accidents for a number of years, if youve had a licsence for more then ten years, etc etc.

if i were you id stick to the alberta insurance.

Right now, I'm looking at atleast 1700 a year for just liability on the Cavalier... the Firebird I'm going to get through a company who specializes in older "classic" vehicles, since it doesn't get much road time.

Re: Questions for BC car guys...

With my 10% discount I pay 4100 a year for my GTI VR6. No accidents, no declerations, nothing. This is apparently because the parts for my car are very expensive. Jeez I hope I never break anything if they're THAT expensive!
If I was driving an F-body I think I'd come out under 3000 with my 10%, probably around 2600 full coverage. Just a wild guess.
OP, you live in snow country and you don't have collision?

$4100!!!!!!!!!! For that much money, I wouldn't even be driving!!! I'd rather take that money and put it away for a nicer ride later. You'd be better off to drive a beater and put that money away for when you have a bigger discount and the rate is more reasonable. You could by a decent F-body in two years for the amount of money you'd save by driving a older honda or even a cavalier or something. Imports are always higher in insurance costs. I pay $1600 for my TA for full coverage and a 40% discount. My golf (diesel) is $1660 at full coverage and 40%. Same year, less power, but it's an import.

If you want to register an out of province car, I think you may need a BC motor vehicle inspection done? Anybody?

Air care only checks emmissions with an idle test and a driving dyno test. Also checks for computer codes on 98 and up vehicles.

Huge money grab operation run by an American company - Death to air care

Re: Questions for BC car guys...

i moved from Newfoundland to Calgary, required outta province inspection... Moved from calgary to Vancouver, required outta province inspection...

I also noticed a 50% drop in insurance prices when i moved to BC. I was AMAZED.

The biggest thing you'll notice (or at least, i did) when i moved from Calgary to Vancouver, is that NO Speeding tickets (or even normal moving violations, running stop signs, etc...) go against your insurance. This was amazing! It seems to me, that the ONLY thing that makes your rates go up, is accidents.

I had a reckless driving charge on my license in Calgary, 50% surcharge... move to BC, and its gone.. they don't care if you drive like a maniac, just don't cause accidents

i love BC insurance prices! especially compared to Calgary or Newfoundland

Yep, and that's why I don't have air bags in my car ( couldn't afford to put them back in).
I've only had one accident since I was 17, I'm 23 now. I thought about not driving for a while and just parking until my rates go down...
But, the insurance companies tell me that won't help much since age has little to do with the new insurance set up in Alberta... they go by your years behind the wheel. And, if you're not insured to drive, they assume you haven't been driving.

What's an out of province inspection? For now I'll be sticking with Alberta insurance for sure, but come summer... I might switch.. not sure what the difference will really be though.

Insurance is cheaper on Vancouver Island than it is in Vancouver. Heck, V.I. insurance is even cheaper than it is in Salmon Arm! My gf lived in Salmon Arm over the summer for a coop job and had to pay more for insurance... go figure. Also, I think emissions testing is only a lower mainland thing. We don't get tested for it here in Victoria.

i pay 278/month and i have a 20% discount. no accidents or anything. they rape you up the *** when you get in accidents, but it goes away after 3 years or sometihng like that it goes back to what you were at before. I think anyways. hope it helps.

Re: Questions for BC car guys...

They've changed BC insurance quite a bit over the years. Used to be you got a 10% increase in your discount every year until you were at 40% (basic insurance). Now it's 5% per year up to 43% and up to 54% discount on your extra insurance.

Depending on where you are in the rate ladder depends on how far back you go in an at fault accident. If you're a "Roadstar Gold" you go back 3 spaces.....that probably means you keep the 43% discount but go back to 52% discount on your extras (collision, comprehensive etc)

Insurance ladder

Jimbo, you're paying $4100/year? Sheesh. I pay less than that for insurance and gas combined. Oh well. Still beats the $10K that Dohhunter used to pay over in Ontario.

Here's my insurance from about 3 years ago. I think it's gone up a couple dollars or so. But not much. They sneek hidden fees in there like upping the comprehensive to $300 and adjusting the license fee. It's highway robbery if you ever buy it short term.

Gord's rediculously high insurance rates
