When I was riding a motor bike, I was given to believe that you never painted a brain bucket because the paint would weaken the plastic.

I've also heard that you aren't supposed to paint helmets and it will weaken the structure.

but ur only painting over the current paint and clear coar

either way .. there might be some NHRA rules against it

it would be pretty sh|tty to pay $140 for a helmet and have to throw it away

Nah way , all you have to do is scuff the helmet with 800 grit paper to promote adhesion and lay down some basecoat , which goes on so dry the solvents would never have the dwell time to soften / compromise the integrity of the plastic substrait . . . Maybe if you soaked the helmet overnight in thinners it would weaken the shell but as far as painting them , it should be fine . Clearcoat also has such a small solvent content at aprox 4 parts clear to 1 part solvent - 1 part hardener I dont see any problem . Fwiw I was looking at the helmet on thursda and started taking it apart to paint ( candy blood red over charcoal base ) but the plastic face shield peice is a pita to get out as the foam crap is glued in and I didnt want to break it. If you leave it on it will remain white underneath and look kinda bad imo .

EDIT -- Still a great idea to check the rules first before going crazy with a big naked chick mural or something plastered all over it

Someone on the VIFBODY board said I should check to see if the helmets are SA rated, and not just SM rated (for motorcycles). Apparently, you need an SA rated helmet for motorcross here on the island. So you know if it is SA rated?

It is SM2000 rated. This is fine for autoX and drag racing. However not good enough for road racing, and I guess not good enough for motocross either.

I know you guys are trying to buy from someone in the local area but there are a few helmets on ebay that are Snell 2000s that are going for less then $100 a piece.

I have one of these helmets, very good deal and looks good too.

There is a pic of it on this page: http://www.rciracing.com/page10.htm

It's the helmet on the top of the page.

Yep, but that's American currency I am assuming.... at volume we are looking to buy these helmets brand new at around 75 USD.

Painting doesn't hurt the helmet. For example, look at all the moto-cross, formula one, nascar etc guys that have Troy Lee paint their helmets. I watched how they do it and there isn't any special technique, they just grab a regular helmet and paint it.
