Moving to Portland, need help

Well, looks like I am moving from Texas out to the Pacific Northwest, Portland to be exact. Got a job with an Engineering company out there. I'll be starting July 12th, so probably moving out there about a week or so before that. Anyone have any suggestions on apartments?? My office is in Sylvan (a few miles west of Downtown), so I'd like something within 5 miles or so of my office, and a decent price range. I've looked at apartmentguide.com for one bedroom apts and have found some pretty sweet looking fairly new places for about $550 a month in Hillsboro. That is about in my price range. And those look pretty new from the pictues online. I'd like to stay below $550/ month if I can. I would like a place on a hill, or something with an awesome view. Of course, that isn't a necessity, BUT, it would be a plus. Other extras that would be nice is covered parking or garages, Washer and Dryer connections as well. If anyone could help me out w/ some ideas, that would be great! I also am going to have to know where the cars hang out, gotta meet some new friends out there. My girlfriend will be in Honduras till the middle of August, then she doesn't finish Grad school here at A&M until December, then she'll be moving back up there (she's from Salem, but wants to move to Portland). So I'll be pretty bored most of the time I'm sure at least until December. I like to workout, so if anyone has some good gym suggestions in that area (Sylvan, Beaverton, and Hillsboro areas) that would be awesome. I currently have a Gold's Gym membership, should I keep it or cancel it and find another local gym there. I'd like to pay $30 or less for my monthly gym dues.

Anyway, I hope I can get some help from some local Oregonians!

Welcome!!.

What kind of engineering firm? I work in the Civil Engineering field designing sub-divisions.

As for Gyms, I don't know of any Gold's gyms left in this area. Most, if not all, the Gold's were bought out by 24hour Fitness Centers.

Sorry I can't help with the apartment situation. I'm not real familiar with the Portland/Hillsboro area since I live across the river.
