Re: Importing a car - my recent experience

I'll bring this up again, as I may need it

Craig, have you had your Federal inspection yet? I assume so... Did you have to change out the instrument cluster? Or any changes have to be made in order to pass the Fed. inspection?

Thanks!!

Re: Importing a car - my recent experience

I just did this with a 2001 Z06 out of El Dorado California

Its a bit of a pita, I had it trucked direct to sumas and dropped it at package express. Customs was a bitch .

Larry helped me bring it accross which was huge help and saved me an *** load of bucks. . . i still have to get mine fixed and inspected *eek*

Re: Importing a car - my recent experience

You do not have to change speedos.
The only thing that may have to be done in that respect is the inspection station may put on a cheezy MPH sticker.
This is only done if it is not clear what the incriments are.
Rarely do we put them on.

The specific requirements for mods required for your car will be laid out in black and white on your RIV form 2

You are normally looking at Recall docs., Daytime running lamps, Infant restraint kit ( in glove box OK) . French SRS decals if the US ones spell out a date for service.

Very minor requirements for most common US sold cars

No, not legally. It must be done at the address the license is issued to.

The Canadian RIV costs are tied into your border fees.
When you come to a RIV certified shop such as ours there is no additional charge to you for the RIV test ( we get paid a whopping 25 bucks from the Registrar)

That gets you into Canada, but to insure it in BC you must also have a Provincial MVI.
This will cost you and is the inspection that actually looks at the condition of your car.

If you have any interest in me doing this for you email me and I will give you the contact info for my service writer.
No "deals" unfortunately. This is government regulated stuff.

Re: Importing a car - my recent experience

Its the initial RIV inspection I am worried about, I have to have it done by march 10th but I dont think I will make it. What do they check in the RIV one ?? I dont need to insure it for a while yet, just need the RIV taken care of

Re: Importing a car - my recent experience

Correct,

The car could be upside down on fire as long as it has met the criteria laid out on the FORM 2.

Here is a cut and paste from their sight.
RIV Sight

Passenger vehicles

ü Recall clearance letter
ü The vehicle must bear a manufacturer's valid statement of compliance label at the time of
importation, otherwise a manufacturer's latter of compliance will be required.
ü The Registrar of Imported Vehicles will mail a Canadian statement of compliance label to you
after passing the federal inspection.
ü Valid alpha-numeric 17-digit VIN
ü Metric speedometer and odometer labels (provided by inspection centre)
ü Daytime running lights, if manufactured after November 1989
ü Infant restraint kit, if manufactured after 1988
ü Child tether anchorage, for most passenger cars manufactured after 1988
(refer to Admissibility List)
ü 8 km/hour bumpers (refer to Admissibility List)
ü French supplementary restraint system label for airbags that require periodic maintenance

Re: Importing a car - my recent experience

. . . I think I just need the baby tether strap thing . . . ill have to order one in from gm. The vettes have OEM running lights and metric / mph guages I think.

Is it possible to get a mobile inspection ?

Do you know if you need the door VIN stickers ?? ( ugly white ones in the door jam )

Re: Importing a car - my recent experience

The door tag could be a big problem if it had the Federal Compliance certification info.
The GVW, GVWF, GVWR and tire pressure info is also required.

I would suggest you contact the Registrar to inquire.

The full VIN is supposed to be found on at least two areas of the car.

As I noted before the Inspection is to be carried out at the address the RIV certification is issued to.

If you need someone closer you can always call your friendly Canadian Tire.

Good Luck, Gerry

Re: Importing a car - my recent experience

So, 95wagon (and anyone else who would know):

1. Is the "Infant restraint kit" just the safety locking clip that you loop the seatbelt through, or is there more to it?

2. Do F-bodies fall under the requirement for "child tethor anchorage", because they never came from the factory with it (I've got a 95 Trans Am, and in my owner's manual, it says it's basically an add-on package).

3. For the "recall letter" requirement, if I know the VIN and go down to my local GM dealer to get a printout stating that there is no outstanding recall, would this satisfy the requirement?

I've been thinking of buying a car from the states, but if it's too much hassle to go through the RIV inspection, I won't bother.

Thanks,
Rob
