Payam, I did lose my license for a year, I could of gotten a lawyer and got away with everything, but I knew what I did, and I owned up to it... I also have the 30 page police report to prove it

Mind you, I kept driving, but I was willing to accept the responsiblity of getting caught and paying even more fines This was back in 98, in Alberta btw

I'm not saying be totally legal, i'm just saying own up and take responsilbity for your actions...

--------
Who would be that financially incompetent, to actually say "here's $173." and shy away. When they can push it and likely not pay!?

Maybe people that take responiblity for their actions?

If you had been speeding on that lone backroad and some deer/animal had jumped out and you creamed it, would you try to cheat icbc saying your were going the normal speed as well? And rip off the tax payers even more? Even though if you were going the speed limit you could of stopped in time?

If i do something illegal, i'm willing to take the punishment for what I do... IF i get caught. I'm not going to try to weasle my way out of it...

but thats just me...

Either way, its just a small step for you to take, going to court I suppose... There is still a high possiblity that the police officer shows up and you get nailed with the ticket regardless...

it seems even worse to me that you can go, if he doesn't show up, your off with nothing, if he does show up, you still get away cheaper...

So by wasting our tax dollars, you get to save money... I dunno how fair that is... *shrug*

In regards to Craigs post...

I guess my hatred is totally dependant on speed... If your going like a bat outta hell read 20+ over the limit, then you shouldn't even be able to try to get off with it, or even reduce it for that matter, unless there is some extreme case... Wife is pregnate, someone is deathly sick, etc... I have no problems with people asking for mercy then

But getting off with it, just becuase you can... I don't think is right...

As I mentioned, I thought I should of gotten warnings, as I was never over 10 km's over the limit...

but the time I lost my license, long story involving 5+ cop cars, spike belts and long stretchs of the #1 highway late at night, I got my case bought from Brooks AB, to calgary... I went to the calgary court room 3 times, only to hear the judge say I had to go home cause they lost the evidence and had to get it again from Brooks... I was also treated badly during my stay with the local police while in brooks... all of which could of led to a complete dismissal in the hands of a lawyer, but i said screw it, I know what I did was 100% wrong, so i'll take what I can get. I told the judge that, and I was very lucky to only get dinged for a 500 dollar fine, rather then the normal thousands.

But of course, the world is full of different people... thats what makes it exciting so we just offer opinions and hang on for the ride, hehe

Sure it's fair to try to get out of it, if you think the law is BULL**** to begin with. It's simply too bad for other people who choose to pay their fines and not fight the system (assuming they disagree with the law also - if they agree with it, then they should pay up). Now I'm not talking about trying to weasel out of punishment for felonies or even street racing, just speeding tickets in certain situations.

Some of the speed limits are freakin ridiculous around here. And if I got caught? fine - but I will do all I can to get out of it simply because I do not agree with the law as it applies to that situation (road, speed limit, traffic, etc.). This would be my way of trying to change the law, which is every citizen's right .

Funny this topic should come up as I just opened up a letter saying when to go to court for a ticket . I was a little pissed off when I got this ticket so I disputed it. Driving the camaro at 50kph through white rock, some woman in a tercel is so drunk she is bouncing off curbs doing 20kph in front of me so I stomped it past her and just as I was doing that the cop (who was doing radar from an illegal spot) clocks me and pulls me over as this pissed drunk woman creeps past. I normally just pay speeding tickets but at the time I had no money, and the cop wrote the wrong date on it and the situation left a bad taste in my mouth. Now however, its not worth my time to dispute the damn thing so I think I will just pay it and wtf is with the cop being able to give evidence via the phone? Thats bull****. If he can do that why cant I? Anyhow, I dont suppose the courts are open on a saturday?

[edit] Yes I was seriously doing 50kph instead of my usual 50mph. White rock at night is a bad place to speed. Figured I best clear that up before someone calls BS .

that being said .. thats exactly what i weasled my way out of ... boo me all u want .. i was fully prepared to pay the fines and lose my license on the spot (i even called matt up that morning to come take my car so they wont tow it) .. but i was lucky that i didnt lose it on the spot .. and later i fought it and won ...

in the end .. i still learned my lesson .. and i learned it very well .. except i saved on a lot of money and got to keep my DL

Craig, happened back in 98 shortly after I left newfoundland and moved to calgary... I went with some friends to visit some of their friends in Brooks which is about 3 hours outside of calgary...

Their friend drove a 5.0 and wanted a ride in my z... so i took him on one about 12:30 @ night, i had no idea where i was, just on some 4 lane street, nailed it through 3rd, cop on the side street... He pulls out behind me, and for some reason I just asked the dude if he knew where we could go, thinking he lives here, he should know... 1/2 hour later, 5+ cops very far behind me, more up ahead (damn radios and spike belts...) and i figure its time to pull over before someone gets hurt...

I knew the guy for about an hour before this happened, and never heard from him again as we were taken away in seperate cop cars

but as you say Payam, it teachs a great lesson... I took full punishment to teach myself a bigger lesson... I even waived the court appointed lawyer and just told my story to the judge... no alcohol or drugs involved, just a stupid mistake that i had no problems dealing with

I BARELY street race now, i havn't in months upon months upon months... the last thing even remotely close to a street race was when I went with you guys on a whistler cruise last summer... To say i've toned my driving down is a HUGE understatement...

but some of that could be due to my car not running as good as I want it, and having much larger priorities in life... marriage and such

mostly i think i'm getting soft my old age (26! ha) and it pains me to see ppl taking speeding so carelessly knowning they can get away with tickets, etc... that and this just caught me badly this afternoon...

just be safe folks!

Way to go Jen. I agree, why pay if you don't have too. they always nab you on some deserted road at night with no traffic or going downhill on a stretch. My only question is, " I didn't know a j-body was fast enough to speed"?
