Concept of a "No Speed Limit" Coquihalla

I assume everyone has heard the proposal from the Kamloops MLA to make the Coquihalla highway with no speed limit. I must admit, that would sure be a pleasant spot to go for a cruise if that did transpire. Alas, in our immature-driving society (with our abundance of immature and inadequate drivers, that is) I'm sure that will never come to be. It may be a rough road in some areas with the patches and concrete, but it really be nice to cruise along on a July day doing 200+ km/hr. I'd driving to Merritt for lunch, if that was the case, on a Saturday.

They say we have 500 accidents annually on the Coq alone (average of almost 2 per day - amazing). I find it so hard to fathom how pathetic the average driver is in BC (or North America, in general). Not that European drivers are better necessarily (I have no proof either way), but they do seem to possess a better attitude towards driving at high speeds - either because they are more used to it, or their culture is less paranoid.

I dont think Canadians in General can handle that speed limit,
think about all the morons in there POS cars tryin to hit 200 km/hr w/ there buddies
it would happen
European drivers must go thru more lessons and training
I think it took one of my cousins in Poland like 6 months of lessons, etc

So thats probibly why there more confident drivers and can handle the speeds.
I went on the AUtobahn as well and these people will be going over 200 km/hr and be like 1 - 2 ft from ur bumper until u merge into a slower lane
If they wanted to have this it would be time to create a few more lanes for the slower motorists out there

I don't think an unlimited speed limit would be a good idea...however, a 150km max would be decent. In my x's Civic, the fastest the car would go was 150km on the Coq. Some of those corners aren't set-up for 200km speeds

I would be in favor of a no speed limit Coq.......in certain places.
As a side rule, it should be still speed policed, but in the manner in which Montana did when they didn't have a speed limit on their highway - the police will still monitor in the speed free zones, only they will look at the car and decide if it is safely capable of doing the speed that it is going.
For instance - when driving across Montana in my fathers Cadillac Allante, we were doing over 200Km for quite a while, and saw many police cruisers. I'm sure they looked and saw the speed and judged that the vehicle was reasonably safe to do that speed.
If were were in a 1982 Audi and (managing to) do the same speed, we would surely be pulled over........
See where I'm going?

Yep it'll never happen. And it's not just driver skill, equipment comes into play at those high speeds. Imagine blowing a front tire at 150-200 km/h

It may be a good idea to have licenses or permits for certain people to speed on the coq or other safe areas. As in, a person would take lessons in handling a vehicle at high-speeds & once the courses are completed they recieve either a permit or some sort of indication on thier drivers license / vehicle plate allowing them to speed in certain areas. It may also be good to make it manditory to have your vehicle aprooved for speeds of that caliber - ensuring that your vehicle can with-stand that speed & also handle saftly.

That'd probaby be better then a free-for-all.

It would be great but what would be better is to take an estimated speed average of what cars are going on that highway then up the speed limit.

Having gotten a ticket recently (gotta remember o put into dispute ) the police target vehicles that are hardly exceeding the posted speed limits under ideal driving conditions. The biggest problem in this province and country is a severe lack of driving skills exhibited by the drivers here. It's quite discusting. The whole motor vehicle licensing system should be redone, with a mandatory performance driving training course. I'd like to see some seniors pass these tests!

Being in the military does have its perks sometimes. I'm over here in Germany right now and travel on the Autobahn regularly. We were all given temporary licenses so we could drive. It takes a few trips off-base to get used to the driving style, signs, and local laws, but it's not so bad.

In our briefing, they said that you can get ticketed for not getting out of the way of a faster car in the fast lane. And if you get rear-ended in the fast lane, usually it's YOUR fault for not getting the hell out of the way. It's still a blast to get in the rental and wring it out with your foot to the floor, but drives me nuts when I'm getting passed by soccer mom's in Audi/BMW stationwagons and I'm already going 215 kmh. BTW, how fast is that?

Damn I wish I had my F-body over here....

Too curvey. I drove the autobahn last year in Germany at 240 and they have wide straight roads there. Our drivers are not used to it-they didn't grow up wih it. Alot more than 2 accidents per day if the speed limit is gone.

I agree that it shall never happen in our culture. Far too many strikes against it. However, I can dream about it, can't I?

Talking Sounds like fun!!

It sure does sound like fun to us folks with safe and stable hi-performance cars. It would be too much fun to wind the Z up and see what she can do, that's for sure. But with that being said, I can also picture the 16 yr old kid in a Chevette with fried bushings on his tie-rods trying to beat the land-speed record and ending up a dark red smudge on the side of the highway. I agree that this would be a blast, but at the same time realize that BC drivers just don't have the experience or skills to navigate their vehicles at high speed. I have to drive the Pat Bay Hwy here on the island every day to and from work, and traffic gets pretty bad at times. It's really amazing to see the dumba$$ moves some twits pull while even doing just 50-60 km/h on the highway... I shudder to think what those same idiots would be capable of at 150+ km/h.

BTW I did that speed in a new Ford Mondeo (a.k.a. Focus) wagon.

It's just gonna suck when I get home and am stuck at 60 mph again.
