It's very possible, but Gremlins ping at your hood.

89 is fine for stock car, 87 would be fine if you tuned your car so the fans turn on early & maybe buy a cold air intake.

You realize we're in Canada and we're talking 1.08 per Liter right? That's somewhere around 3.84 per Gallon canadian. Converted over that's $2.77 USD or so.

As far as I knew you could run 87 without much difficulty (stock car)
A friend of mine used to run it all the time in his 94 Formula when he was broke.
I thought the computor takes care of the problems with the pinging and such - although you'd see some reduced performance and likely some poorer fuel economy.

the lowest i go is 91 and that only if the gas station only has 91. personally its not worth saving the 5 bucks for knocks and pings. i mean im sure we can all live without a mcdonalds meal once a week

My car lives on chevron 89 most of the time. I can feel the knock sensor pull timing under load but it doesn't ping. I get about 13deg of retard this way and when I put 94 back in it's all gone and the car is way more responsive. For daily driving I don't need it to be so responsive because I still beat most challengers. My 1/4 times were done on 89 as well.

you *could* run 87 octane IF you do some combination of these things:

1. you keep the load on the engine lower (foot off the gas, especially in numerically higher gears)
2. the outside air is cool
3. you aren't stuck in stop and go traffic letting your coolant and intake air temps climb
4. tune your car to pull timing, and keep the coolant temps lower.
5. run shorter gears, like 4.10s (helps keep load on engine lower)

Basically if you can keep the car from detonating with that gas by doing the above then its perfectly OK to run that octane. Just please dont rely on your knock sensor to pull timing! some sort of pre-ignition is happening if you KR is kicking in.

LS1's can get away with it easier cuz they have two sets of timing tables, one for low octane and one for high - and their compression/timing are both lower then LT1s.

I never run less then 94 cuz of my nitrous addiction

Haha... Personally, I run nothing but 92 (chevron), regardless of gas prices. When I pull up to the pump, yeah - it hurts paying 10 cents/L more than reg (especially the way gas prices are right now). The way I see it, your car doesn't deserve to suffer. *shrug* :P
