2nd Gen Tranny / Tranny Shops

Hi all,

I just fix a bunch of major problems this weekend and wouldn't you know, my tranny goes today! (Replaced seat belts and broken shock).

Having problems with the 2nd to 3rd shift (it's a TH350), and I think it's not long for this world.

I need it to last me through this week as I just got a big job that requires me to drive all over the place (out to the airport for a trip to Calgary tomorrow, downtown van wednesday/thur, and Victoria thur/fri) - so I'm crossing my fingers.

Anyhow - I thought I'd check here if anyone knows/has a hookup on a tranny that will work (TH350/400 that will fit an '81 Camaro) OR a good / trustworthy transmission shop - hopefully not too far from Coquitlam.

It would be a bonus if the shop had a curtesy car that I could use and then I won't have to pray over the next couple days.

Thanks,
Grant

I've got a th350 for free as well if you don't pick up Cory's for some reason. I have no idea if it works but it is complete and out of a 78 vette.

just remember that the pontiac/olds th350's have a different bellhousing bolt pattern and the buick/chev ones are normal =)

oh and if you go th400 you'll need a different drive shaft length and a different tranny crossmember

Wow... thanks guys!

CoryM - do you have any info on the transmission? year? milage? anything done to it?

ZedZag - I'd have no idea how I'd test it, hate to get it in and find myself still SOL - but thank-you

I appreciate these free offers, but I should have made myself clearer.

I'd prefer something either equal or better than the tranny I have (a TH350 with a stage II shift kit) and something that will definately run for t least 30,000k. If this happens again before I have another car (not for quite awhile) - then I'll probably be in the same boat as now.

If I do rebuild my current tranny, can anyone suggest a shop?

If you're driving to calgary you may want to just take Cory's tranny and slap it in one night.

As for rebuilding your current tranny, I've used Old Timers Transmissions (Langley) in the past. Never a problem with that TH350. And it withstood many a brake stand, etc etc etc...

Although I've done a rebuild on my own too, and for the labour money saved, it may be worth it for ya. Just buy an instruction manual and you're good to go. But I'm a do-it-yourselfer by nature. :-)

Oh, I'm actually flying to calgary - just need to make it to abbotsford. I'm actually more concerned with the trip to victoria. It's suck to get stuck on the ferry!!

It's more a matter of space and time constraints right now. If I had a shop and time I'd be all for rebuilding it myself.

Thanks for all of the feedback and suggestions though.

This board is a valuable resource (well, at least most of the time when adults are posting).

I dont know much about this tranny, I bought the engine in front of it and it came attached. Car was in a big front end hit (enough to bend the fan) so I assume the car drove well enough to get in a good wreck. Fluid was clean and the engine was in good shape and well maintained. Engine was a virgin block (stock) so Id bet there is no shift kit in the tranny. However, I do not have any use for it (you know not being a girl and all ) if you do take yours in for a rebuild you may want this one for parts if nothing else. If no one takes it away I will just toss it on the scrap metal pile. BTW I think I know where a built poncho TH350 is also for cheap if someone needs that.

hmm free trannies eh

*evil thoughts of vonverting to an auto swarming my head again*

how much does it cost to rebuild one of these to be bulletproof ? and how much does it cost for a nice converter for a TH350 ?

hey Grant: how do those seat belts look in ur car man ? take some pics

Hi Cory,

Sorry for the delay. Thanks for holding the tranny for me. I think at this point I'm going to go the rebuild path.

And yes, I know, it's a girly auto - but I plan for my next f-body to be
a standard (hopefully a 4th gen with a 6spd). =)
