Texas Howdy! Looking to buy and need some info/suggestions

Hello all,

i'm glad i found you guys. i was doing some research and it looks like i found the right place. i'll have plenty to browse over the next few days but first, i'd like to explain my situation and get a little feed back or direction to specific threads.

i've always been a camaro/firebird fan. my good friend in high school had an amazing firehawk, i was hooked. the parents of a girl i used to give rides to after school bought a new 2000 SS and i would drool over it every day. i haven't heard from her in maybe 8 years, but a couple of days ago, she messaged me on facebook to tell me her parents were contemplating selling their SS. this of course caught my attention and the memories/fever came back. i honestly can't remember if its manual or auto but auto would be a deal breaker for me. i'm waiting on current pics but i might swing by around thanksgiving to take a look.

1.) this is what i know:

2000 Camaro SS
56k miles
garage kept/babied (knowing the family, i believe it)
more than likely stock

what would you say is a fair price on a car like that from the original owner?

price she said they were thinking: $10k

she said they aren't really in any hurry, so i told her i probably couldn't afford it right away but to definitely notify me if they get an offer and i would try to beat it. this could give me some time to get the money in order and/or possibly get it cheaper this time next year or something.

2.) if this doesn't work out, i'm still interested in finding a 2000 or newer SS. i know there are some minor differences, but which year would you prefer (of course, availability will apply) and should i hold out looking for a particular model?

3.) what's the best way to go about searching? i've tried craigslist and ebay, but everyone apparently thinks their car is the most valuable in the world.

thanks for having me, looking forward to some great discussion and learning!

Welcome to the board.

I do not know much about current pricing on a 2000 model. What I do know is that in Maine, with winter coming, a decade old rear wheel vehicle is usually a difficult sale. Car dealers usually do not give much on trade in value where I live for performance cars this time of year either.

The actual value is determined greatly by your location, spot market demand, and vehicle condition and history. I would first express an interest in the vehicle so you are placed at the top of their list. I would also ask if they are considering trading in the vehicle or not. That will help you negotiate a price that is fair to them and fair to you.

Edit:
Ahhhh... I see you already have a handle on things.... Not enough coffee yet this morning.

Welcome! Remember, there are a lot of these cars out there. Don't jump on one that might not be the best deal because you fell like you cannot find another. The right one will come along!

I think 10k is a pretty fair price on a low-mile 2000 SS in great condition. Not a great price, just fair.

If it turns out the car is an automatic, like Jason said -- remember that there are lots of these cars out there, and more than one of them are exactly what you want. Be patient and dilligent and you'll find a car that makes you happy for a good price.

Welcome Justin! Great to see another Texan here! You might keep an eye on the West South Central Regional forum for cars for sale in your area. I am kinda also in the market for a stick shift 4th Gen. I'm not actively searching, but if the right deal came along...
