hey guys!
My name is Kedryn and I just recently bought an '88 IROC-Z. From what I can tell by the pictures my father sent me, it's mostly stock. When I get home from my deployment I plan on going all out with upgrades. Id like to know what you all think is the best route to go and what may need replaced and so on.

Welcome to CamaroZ28.com!!
We tend to be heavy on 4th Gen/LT1 owners, but we can offer help to 3rd Gen owners as well. Best place to start is a full examination of the condition of the car and it's various operating systems and components. Would be helpful to know things like mileage, any major component replacements or modifications already done, engine condition, any engine modifications, trans type, etc.
Best place to start, after the inspection, is complete replacement of all fluids and filters with high quality materials. Then determine what direction you want to go in:
-restoration to total stock/original condition
-upgrades of some appearance components like wheel/tires
-do you want a daily driver, a weekend cruiser, an Auto-X, road race or dragstrip performer?
-what is the budget and time frame of any work that you want to do.
Sounds like a great car already.... just need to insure it's reliable and safe first.

Like I said, I'm currently deployed with the US army so my knowledge of the car is kind of slim. This is what I can tell you all though. The car has 43k miles on it, all original. No modifications to the engine or trans. I want this car to be a summer car because in ohio the winters a brutal on cars due to the mass amount of salt on the roads. I do not have a spending limit and time is not a problem either.

We're about a month shy of being home! Once I'm actually able to see my car, I'm sure I'll be able to give more details. Thanks for the speedy replies, and I'll keep you up to date.

Welcome. Pray for a safe trip home as well.
Like already mentioned, complete once over the car is essential to having a somewhat pain free build. Start with getting the car to ground zero as I call it. Meaning you want all maintanence and repairs out of the way. The 88 is already over 20 years old and it may need a fair amount of wearables replaced. Anything rubber could be a potential issue. Go through it with a fine tooth comb and make up a repair list, anything from as small as a missing interior screw to a worn ball joint or tune up.
Next make up a game plan for what you want from it. Sounds like you want a fun summer car.....who doesn't. Do you prefer factory original, slight aftermarket but to the point it could easily be returned to factory if desired. Do you want wild and don't care what it takes to get you there?
Following that you decide a plan to work toward your goals. A well thought out plan will help you greatly with getting there without wasting the budget on constant changes.
Looking forward to seeing where you go with this one. Always loved the third gen body.
