New Car, New Member of 97 SS - Love IT

Just wanted to say hello from Pennsylvania. Is there anything about the SS I should know about? More horsepower, but are there any problems associated with them? Thanks,

Welcome! What do you want to know about the LT1 SS? I'd say I know quite a bit about them.

I have a similarly optioned '97 SS that I've owned for 5 years. Post up some pics of yours!

Question about the air filter. Looks like it had a k&n filter, but it was so bad I purchased a new one. There was three different sizes, found the one that fit, but it is not as high as the original one. Do you see any problem with that? I will post some pictures when I figure out how.

Another thing about finding parts, most sites do not list the SS option and things like tires, air filter, rims show you the wrong info.

The biggest problem I have with the car is that someone prior to me cut out the catalytic converters and put in straight pipe. I put classic plates on the car so I will not need an emissions test.

Air Filter - If it has a K&N, it should not need to be replaced unless it is deteriorating. You can clean it. However, multiple people on this site suggest NOT to run a K&N in a ram air setup as the K&N oil can clog up the MAF. I have ran a K&N on my SS since 2007 or 2008 (~20k miles) without issue, however. The part # I am using is 33-2018, however I plan on switching to a Blackwing filter in the future.

There were just over 5,000 SS's made in 96-97 so they aren't particularly common like the later LS1 (98+) SS's. Know your car and the option code isn't a big deal. There is a sticker on the door with the tire info, which if you have a coupe/t-top car with the factory wheels the tire size you want is 275/40/17. If you are looking at getting aftermarket wheels post up in the wheels & tires section on this site and they can help you find a wheel with the right bolt pattern, offset, etc.

Catalytic Converter - I'm not running them on my car either, I have a full 3" exhaust.

Good luck with the new toy!

What does the DMV require I bring for switching license plates to a different car?
I live in upstate New York. I'm going to switch the license plates from my old car to a car a family member is selling me.

My guess is I'm going to need the car titles, the plates, the photo ID driver's license, and an X amount of dollars. What am I missing? I feel like the DMV is going to require something else and search engines aren't cutting it.

Odd... you say you live in upstate New York, but you are posting from an IP address in Pakistan, and you have a spam link for a "signature". And you've posted on one of our forums that you have a supercharged thunderbird, and on another that you have a Dakota pickup.

Bye.
