( '95 Z) Long time owner, never joined here...

Hiya gang... Tom here from the Milwaukee, WI area. Got a white '95 Z28 with the "black & flame red" interior that I've owned since new. Was a participant at the first couple of Memphis gatherings with ChrisFrezz & JasonD & the gang.

She was my daily driver for the first 5 years or so...but has sat dormant a majority of the past 15+ years. Picked up a car that was better for winters and...pretty much settled into driving that by default, especially since the AC wasn't working either. A dozen times or so over the past 10 years, people have left notes on my car saying they were interested in buying it, running or not. Thought about letting it go a few times but couldn't bring myself to do it. A few weeks ago we decided to get our 20 year old driveway leveled which necessitated being able to move the car off. I'm going to venture a guess that I probably hadn't even had a battery in it for about 3 years...and the last time I did it didn't get driven much. When I picked up a battery and put it in, I wasn't expecting much and..I wasn't disappointed. The remote wouldn't unlock the doors...the switch inside didn't unlock the pax side, etc. So I pulled out the fuel injector fuses and cranked the engine until I got oil pressure. Put the fuses back in and...it fired up instantly on what was probably a mix of 3 and...maybe 8 year old gas..! Let it run, released the parking brake and it started rolling down my driveway...brakes weren't seized. Took it around the block a couple of times (unregistered/uninsured so I wasn't going further than that.) Clearly she forgives me. Put a smile back on my face. Nope! Not selling it.

Started compiling the laundry list of needed fixes and it's really not too bad.

Done:
Oil - changed.
Window motors - were very slow, changed them.
Brakes - complete crap initially...driven about 200 miles now and they're working almost back to spec. Probably not urgent.
Turn signals - had a few bulbs to replace. Done for now.
Door locks/remote - Mostly resolved by moving the locks and door handles manually a few times. Still cannot LOCK the doors with the key fob. Hear a clicking from the BCM and locking works from the interior switch...Not sure what to think there yet.

Need to fix:
Tires---duh. They're worn, cracked and dated 2002. Probably bought them as takeoffs from an ebay dude around '05-ish.
Optispark vent hoses both clipped / chewed - need to replace. Pinched off at the moment.
Stereo: Right rear speaker/subwoofer ("bose" system) sounds blown. Also had a few weird cases where the head unit seemed like it was losing/regaining power several times a second until I shut it off/on. Either dying or more evidence of BCM soldering needed.
A/C - _probably_ just the easy line from dryer to condenser - I did charge it up once and had AC for a couple of days. Part coming in next couple of days
Engine bay -needs a serious wash and/or steaming.
Paint: Needs a few touch ups, especially some surface rust from rock bruises on hood. I've got a guy...

At any rate, trying to get a couple of tanks of gas through it before the snow flies and resolve what I can so that I remain interested in driving it.

Welcome to CamaroZ28.com ! ! !

A warning.... this site is not what is used to be, since Chris and Jason sold it Internet Brands many years ago. Fortunately, the few of us who remain are of the LT1 diehard sort - LOL. Shoebox is still here. I've managed to hang on for 22 years - about the only moderator who is here every day., The Administrator hasn't signed in for three years. Fortunately, Internet Brands is very responsive to my requests for help with the site operations. We've added a newer member, an electrical engineer who has written great FREE scanning software for the 93-95 OBD-1 cars. Probably about a dozen of so "hands on" LT1 owners who stop in to help. Beyond that, a lot of newbies who have recently purchased an LT1, in need of help.

The situation with your car is similar to mine - been sitting for maybe 8 years, unstarted, battery long deceased. I'm afraid to even try starting it without totally cleaning the fuel system - dual pumps, modified fuel rails, 74# injectors, outboard fuel pressure regulator, all braided SS lines. But I'm at a point where I'm getting too old to do the work myself.

As far as the windows, on yours, even after replacing the motors, its going to be a good idea to lube the tracks to reduce the strain on the motors. Also note that the 95 does not have a BCM. That was added in 96 to replace multiple previous modules. The 95 radio is power by the RAP (retained accessory power) module, the remote locks by the keyless entry receiver, etc.

Thanks. Yeah, the first problem is the keyless entry. I saw mentions of it being a BCM on other sites.

Definitely something clicking down by the passenger feet when I hit the button so it's receiving...but not forwarding the info to the lock mechanism. Not sure what the deal is there then.

As to the radio, it's probably just dying then. I'd say what happened was the display blinked about 5 times a second for a couple of seconds the last time it happened. Made a sound kinda like some vehicles when you try to start 'em with an almost dead battery and instead of the starter turnover you just get clicking as it fails to energize the solenoid.

Yeah, I know we're a dying breed...although my Z is now older than I was when I bought it. :O

The keyless entry receiver is behind the passenger kick panel. There's a recent thread dealing with where to get a replacement, and I think they may only be available used. I'll see if I can find the thread.

Shoebox has the wiring diagram for the keyless entry system:

http://shbox.com/1/keyless_schematic.jpg

The radio and the power windows get power from the RAP module. That is the device that keeps the radio and windows powered for 10 minutes or so after you turn the key to "off", or until you open the door. If the contacts in the module are deteriorating, you can get intermittent loss of power to the radio and windows. The printed circuit boards in these devices seem to start falling apart as they age. Sometimes they are repairable with soldering.

Thanks, good to know . Yeah, I found the thread you mentioned and through it I found a replacement KEM module and have that ordered. Will have to investigate the RAP. The radio hasn't done that again since that point so maybe ithe RAP is OK. I definitely used to know this car better than I do now. Hah!

Back to your comment about selling the board to IB...saw the same thing sportbikes.net being sold to VS back in the day. Massive downhill. I miss forums and am annoyed at VS/IB's part in killing them.

Some of us still around from the mailing list days keep a Discord going, but it's more because we're friends that met through the cars - many of them don't have f-bods anymore. Hah.
