Native Texan coming to Boston!!
Hey guys.... Im planning on taking a trip to Boston 7/31--8/4. As long as my buddy doesnt flake on me. I need some tips and ideas on where to go and what to do. Also, how do I blend in? I dont want to look too much like a tourist
I want to see historical stuff... check out the pubs (Im 26 btw). Im supposed to be staying at the Park Plaza hotel... looks neat in the pics and says its .7 miles from downtown (is that ok?).
Um... I want to check out some schools... like Harvard, MIT, etc.. just walk around and take tons of pics around Boston. Maybe catch a ride to Providence and have dinner there or something one of the days. Is there a train or some means of transportation to Providence? I see there is a subway (never been on one).... how does that work? Get tokens or a pass or something?
You'll have to forgive me, Ive been in Houston all my life...
Any suggestions would be appreciated
(Im going to post in the lounge too, to get ideas from past visitors)

1st thing to do is take the cowboy hat off.
Park Plaza uh? Nice. The T(subway) is very easy to manuver with. www.mbta.com
It costs a buck each ride. There are tourist idea's here
www.boston.com there is the Freedom trail that you can walk. You will See the cemetary where Paul Revere and Sam Adams are buried.
You could also take the Commuter Rail, also part of the T, down to Providence but renting a car and driving down might be easier, possibly.
There really is so much to do and see you won't have a slow day at all.

The internet rocks for travel plans!
If it stays like this, the package deal is $457 per person for round trip air from houston to boston, and 4 nights at that hotel.
So... I read the cheers pub is close to the hotel and there is some sea food place someone recommended to me. Are there Starbucks there?
had to ask. Im used to southern food... hows the chowder? If I get desperate, do they have chicken fried steak?
Thanks for the links... I can get a visitors pass for the T for $11, that kicks ***. So, the T pretty much goes everywhere I need to go?

Yup. Starbucks is out here too. Just like most urban areas Boston has about everything. Everybody has their favorites. I do Dunkin Donuts coffee, but that us just my taste...
Providence isn't far from Boston. It is a pretty city. Mystic Seaport is in CT if you decide to rent a beater and drive south. It is quite an experience if you like historic stuff. Of course there is Bunker hill and the Constitution (the ship, not the book) right in Boston. Quincy Market needs to be checked out, and lots of great restaurants, shops, and pubs...
Who knows, maybe we should have a "special" night out as the New England boys havene't been to one of thos "special" dollar clubs in awhile....
Marc?????? Did you hear me??????

YES
Another Texan
I grew up in Texas all my life, went to Texas Tech and now I'm in Beantown with all these dam yankees everywhere.
Its alright though, you'll have a good time, take the "freedom trail" around town to check out all the historical stuff and then get good and drunk on some Sammy Adams at the Bell in Hand Tavern which is the oldest bar in America, 1760 something or somewhere around that time, theres a commuter rail that goes to Providence, just don't go to Ptown, (diff place, not prov.) too many gentlemen of a "diff" lifestyle, not that theres anything wrong with that to quote seinfeld, at any rate, work that accent with the 2 good looking girls that live in Boston and you'll have a blast, by the way, could you PLEASE bring some Texas women with you, this place is ridiculously parched of good looking girls, and I don't want all you home grown yanks to bust me on this one, you guys just don't understand.
Hope to see you around

Man... I was looking at some of the sites/tours in Boston and I came across the Ptown one... it looked really interesting. I mean you are on this cruise ship and stop there for like 3.5hrs... but then I clicked on activities and got this GAY AND LESBIAN thing. Man, I bet that crap fools tons of people every year.
I dont know if Im going now... buddy is flaking on me
I have to run it by two other buds, possibly my old man since he should be back in Tx then.
I think the duck tour looks cool. They have a duck tour in Galveston, Tx too...
So, go to the old bar, cheers bar, market, freedom trail, couple of museums, couple of schools, play on the T thing, go to providence for dinner or lunch or something, and I saw a walking tour for like $9... thats a decent bit of stuff. Oh, and Old Ironsides, and the harbor stuff.

GO TO FENWAY PARK!!!
even if you're not that much of a baseball fan the atmosphere is unlike anything else you will experience anywhere for a sporting event.....
we don't need to talk about the $4.75 watered down drafts with no lids
Boston is a wicked fun city, check out the Rack (aptly named for the pool tables and the bartenders
), fenway, see the common, duck tours, swan boats, sooo many different bars and restaurants to hop around to. Tia's on the waterfront has good food and has a nice open porch area
oh and just in case it applies to you, you can't smoke anywhere inside in boston
