MA inspection...

im thinking of is there any inspections in MA that are easy to pass if you have too loud of an exhaust or long tube headers, or too big of a cam...? like is there any that you can give $100 and pass or somethin in MA?
thanks

Re: MA inspection...

Regarding the exhaust mods: shops vary in their throughness and understanding of the inspection guidelines. You should ask around in your area to determine which stations are the 'sloppiest'. I've used several shops in western Mass that perform only the emissions and basic safety check, without any apparent concern for my visible modifications.

As for the cam....

Re: MA inspection...

I've found that the smaller gas stations that perform inspections are clueless as to what emmision equipment is required and focus on speedy safty and dyno testing. As for the actual emmisions test I think you need to find a tech who'll run a different car on the dyno if your car won't pass because as I understand it the emmision test is all computerized and connected

Thats only 96+ cars that get scanned. All OBD1 cars get the sniffer.

Re: MA inspection...

I'm sure they would hear it. Just go and try random places with money in your hand.

You need to make some friends in the business. I doubt any inspection station would risk taking a bribe from a stranger. No shop that was known to be unscrupulous or blatently incompetent would be in business long. I know people who have obtained stickers in the fashion you're describing, and all of them used close personal connections.

Re: MA inspection...

In my experience the shop techs just do what the rmv computer tells them. My car has long tubes with a custom dual-cat y-pipe. Technically illegal. I have a 95 pcm in my car so I was taking the treadmill and passing it. Now I have to put the original pcm back in so I can pass the obd-2 plug-in test.

This whole system of having the rmv computer at the inspection station hooked into a central database would make it tough to just buy a sticker. I thought I heard of some people saying a shop would throw another car up there and pass the test..... However, the thing that worries me is that the pcm (in our cars at least) contain the vin. I don't think the rmv computer compares the vin in the pcm with the vin entered from the registration. Obviously, if that was the case it wouldn't be advisable to plug into a "stand-in" car. Even if the rmv computer passed the car, the fact that the vins differed could in theory be sent back to the rmv database and perhaps cause problems down the road for you and the shop.

You cannot convert an older car to obd-2. If your car is 95 or older, you will have to pass the treadmill. So that would mean that you would have to run cats and a reasonable cam. (I passed with some special tuning with the setup in my sig when it was a 350.)

Re: MA inspection...

Don't be so sure the RMV isn't picking up on OBDII scans done on different cars than entered into the inspection computer. They've already busted several shops for this, just a friendly fyi.

Re: MA inspection...

lol openly saying youll bribe someone for an inspection isnt the best thing to do. You should try to see if one of your friends knows someone with a liscense. Or see if maybe there is a way you can get around it. P.M. me and ill give ya a few pointers.

Re: MA inspection...

My brother has an inspection license, I get free inspections.

There isn't much to worry about if you have a 96+ and ODB-II. Most guys who run shops won't fail you for longtubes unless they're jerks.
